OTTAWA: In an election day message, US President Donald Trump reiterated his threats of annexation and trade war, while Canadian voters were counting their ballots Monday in an election that will select a leader to address these issues.
Before a surge of patriotism and a sharp turnabout in polling caused by Trump’s attacks on Canada, the Liberal Party, led by new Prime Minister Mark Carney, was lagging behind Pierre Poilievre’s Conservatives.
Results from smaller eastern provinces are beginning to trickle in as polling booths across the huge country, which covers six time zones, begin to close.
A predicted result is not anticipated until later on Monday, as voting was still going on across a large portion of Canada.
