As political tensions rise ahead of the October elections, a well-known Tanzanian Catholic priest and government opponent has been brutally attacked.
Two individuals accosted Fr. Charles Kitima at night in a canteen restroom close to his home in Dar es Salaam after he had attended an all-day religious gathering.
He was struck in the head by a blunt object, according to the police, and was taken to the hospital, where his status is stable.
Prior to the attack, witnesses reported seeing Fr. Kitima speaking with multiple persons. Shortly after people were observed leaving the site, he was discovered bleeding and phoning for assistance.
