WASHINGTON: The Department of Homeland Security announced Monday that the Trump administration will provide travel assistance and a $1,000 stipend to migrants who choose to voluntarily “self deport” from the United States.
According to the agency, the payment and possible airfare for migrants who want to leave willingly would be less expensive than a deportation. According to DHS, the average cost of apprehending, holding, and expelling an individual without legal status is currently at $17,000.
Deportations under Republican President Donald Trump have lagged behind those under Democratic predecessor Joe Biden, despite Trump’s January inauguration pledge to deport millions of immigrants. Due to the high rate of illegal immigration, Biden’s government swiftly deported numerous people who were captured crossing the border.
