As Syria attempts to recover from a grueling civil war that has lasted more than ten years, US President Donald Trump stated Monday that he was thinking about providing sanctions relief, according to AFP.
“We will need to make a decision regarding the sanctions, which we might be able to lift. Before leaving for a Middle East trip, Trump told reporters at the White House, “We may take them off of Syria because we want to give them a fresh start.”
Following nearly 14 years of catastrophic violence, Syria’s Islamist rulers, who overthrew longstanding president Bashar al-Assad in December, are attempting to reconstruct the nation’s economy and infrastructure.
In an effort to boost the nation’s struggling economy and aid in reconstruction, the new administration has been advocating for the lifting of sanctions imposed by the Assad regime.
