Citing a better security situation in the Taliban-ruled nation, US President Donald Trump’s administration took action Monday to revoke legal protections that temporarily prevented Afghans from being deported, according to AFP.
Afghanistan’s temporary protected status (TPS) designation will end on May 20 and be terminated on July 12, according to Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem.
“We’ve reviewed the conditions in Afghanistan with our interagency partners, and they do not meet the requirements for a TPS designation,” Noem stated in a statement.
“Afghanistan has had an improved security situation, and its stabilising economy no longer prevents them from returning to their home country.”
