WASHINGTON: As it prepares to carry out President Donald Trump’s proposal to remove transgender members from the US military, the Pentagon is stopping gender-affirming healthcare for these troops, a letter seen by Reuters on Monday revealed.
According to the memo, the Defense Department’s directives prohibited transgender troops from undergoing any new hormone treatments or surgeries.
As stated in the memo, “I am directing you to take the necessary steps to immediately implement this guidance,” said Stephen Ferrara, acting assistant secretary of defense for health affairs.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by the Defense Health Agency, which was referred to by the Pentagon.
