Tens of millions of people were displaced within their own nations last year due to raging conflicts, natural disasters, and the rising effects of climate change, setting a new record, according to monitors, who spoke to AFP on Tuesday.
In the midst of massive displacement from conflicts in areas like Sudan and Gaza, as well as floods and massive cyclones, an unprecedented 83.4 million internally displaced people (IDPs) were registered in 2024, which is equal to the population of Germany.
In their yearly joint report on internal displacement, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) stated that the number has more than doubled from just six years earlier.
According to a statement by IDMC chief Alexandra Bilak, “internal displacement is where conflict, poverty, and climate collide, hitting the most vulnerable the hardest.”
