LONDON: As his administration outlined proposals aimed at curbing legal immigration and thwarting growing support for the radical right, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer pledged Monday to “finally take back control” of Britain’s borders.
After the previous Conservative administration lost the general election last year, Labour leader Starmer declared he was ending a “experiment in open borders” that caused net migration to increase to almost one million individuals.
Plans to reduce the number of foreign care workers and extend the period of time individuals must reside in the UK before being eligible for settlement and citizenship from five to ten years are included in the government’s Immigration White Paper policy document.
