Authorities reported early Tuesday that at least 213 prisoners had escaped from Karachi’s Malir Jail following an evacuation due to an earthquake, sparking a massive manhunt.
According to rescue sources, multiple security guards were hurt and at least one prisoner was killed during the break-in.
As security personnel step up their attempts to apprehend the fugitives, over 127 inmates are still at large, despite the fact that about 89 have been caught.
The jailbreak happened when prisoners from Circles No. 4 and No. 5 were removed from their dormitories as a safety measure during the tremors, according to Jail Superintendent Arshad Shah.
At the moment, almost 600 inmates were not inside their cells. 213 people were able to escape during the pandemonium,” he said.
