President Donald Trump’s most extensive tariffs were temporarily reinstated by a federal appeals court on Thursday, one day after a U.S. trade court declared that Trump had overreached himself in enforcing the levies and put an immediate hold on them.
In order to review the government’s appeal, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington announced that it was halting the lower court’s decision. The court also mandated that the administration answer by June 9 and the plaintiffs in the cases respond by June 5.
The US Court of International Trade’s unexpected decision on Wednesday threatened to halt or at least postpone the implementation of Trump’s so-called Liberation Day duties on imports from the majority of US trading partners as well as extra tariffs on goods from China, Canada, and Mexico.
