Iran pressed the United States for assurances it will lift sanctions on Monday, saying it will not accept a nuclear deal that denies it access to what it refers to as “peaceful activities,” which includes uranium enrichment.
In negotiations to finalize a nuclear agreement since April, uranium enrichment has been a major source of dispute between the adversaries. Iran defends what it claims is its pursuit of a civil nuclear program, while the US calls it a “red line.”
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated: “If the goal is to deprive Iran of its peaceful activities, then certainly no agreement will be reached.” He was speaking in Cairo, where he visited Rafael Grossi, the head of the UN nuclear watchdog.
