In order to consult on the selection of the new chief election commissioner (CEC) and two members of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formally called Omar Ayub, the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, to a meeting.
The prime minister pointed out in a letter to Ayub that the current CEC and two ECP members are currently serving under Article 215 of the Constitution, while their constitutional terms ended on January 26. Until their replacements are chosen, officials are permitted to stay in their positions under this provision.
Since the final list of suggested candidates is necessary for the appointment of the CEC and ECP members, the PM underlined the importance of mutual consultation.
