Hours after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi informed him that the ceasefire during a four-day fighting in May was reached through negotiations between the neighboring military, not US mediation, US President Donald Trump asserted on Wednesday that he had put an end to the war between India and Pakistan.
Trump’s comments, which are certain to annoy India, a nation the US president and his predecessor Joe Biden diligently courted as part of efforts to fight back against China, came just before he was supposed to visit Field Marshal Asim Munir in a rare meeting at the White House on Wednesday.
Trump told reporters at the White House what he hoped to get out of the lunch discussion, which comes after a phone conversation he had with Modi on Tuesday night.
