The very conservative Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) has never been an ally of Armenia’s liberal government, but a significant rift was blown when Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan made unusual accusations against an anonymous senior clergyman.
“Go play around with your uncle’s wife, Your Grace. What are you looking for from me? Pashinyan said.
He also called for the resignation of Catholicos Karekin II, the ultimate spiritual leader, accusing him of violating his vow of chastity by fathering a child. The Church has not responded to the news request for comment.
Up until now, the government and the Church have managed to get along, but the dispute might further polarize Armenian society and influence the results of the election the next year.
