ISLAMABAD Pakistan plans to raise production of electric vehicles (EVs), mostly electric motorbikes, to 2.2 million units over the next five years as part of its global climate commitments. To finance these aggressive incentives, the government is imposing additional taxes on traditional auto buyers, which surprised parliamentarians on Wednesday, according to The News.
A three-tiered levy structure would be applied: 1% for new car purchases up to 1300cc, 2% for vehicles between 1301 and 1800cc, and 3% for those beyond 1800cc, the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Finance was told during its meeting. Committee members were astonished to see that these costs were not included in the formal Finance Bill 2025-2026.
