Moscow has lost one of its top officers when Major-General Mikhail Gudkov, the deputy head of the Russian Navy and a former commander of a marine brigade engaged in combat with Ukraine, was killed in action, the Russian military said Thursday.
Gudkov was killed on Wednesday “during combat work in one of the border districts of Kursk region,” according to a statement from the Defense Ministry. In February, Russian President Vladimir Putin presented Gudkov with a top military honor at the Kremlin.
Gudkov and other servicemen and officers were killed in a Ukrainian missile attack on a command post in Russia’s Kursk area, which borders Ukraine, using a US-made HIMARS missile, according to unofficial Russian and Ukrainian military Telegram channels.
