President Donald Trump’s enormous package of tax and federal spending cuts was approved by the US House on Thursday, paving the way for the bill to be forwarded to the president’s desk for his signature.
By a nearly party-line vote of 218 to 214, the bill was adopted. Together with the 212 Democrats in the House, two Republicans, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania, opposed the plan.
The approval came after House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries used his “magic minute” to talk for hours against the plan and prolong the debate on the package, breaking the record for the longest speech ever given on the House floor.
Over a ten-year period, the law might increase the national debt by an estimated $3.4 trillion.
