Russia became the first country to recognize the Taliban government in Afghanistan on Thursday when it announced that it had accepted the credentials of a new ambassador.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement saying, “We think that the act of formally recognizing the government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan will spur the development of fruitful bilateral cooperation between our countries in various fields.”
