RISHIKESH: A day after unexpected flooding and landslides killed four people and left others missing, rescue efforts in India’s Himalayan state of Uttarakhand were hindered on Wednesday by heavy rain and blocked highways.
According to local media and authorities, landslides blocked a major highway and heavy rain continued to batter the area, making it difficult for teams of army and disaster force rescuers to reach Dharali village, a popular tourist destination that serves as a stopover before climbing to the Hindu pilgrimage town of Gangotri, in Uttarkashi district.
“Relief attempts have continued through the night, although it is unknown how many people are missing. In an X post, army colonel Harshavardhan, who is in charge of rescue operations, stated, “We are attempting to rescue people and take them to safety.”
