According to a joint letter acquired by AFP, Britain, France, and Germany have informed the UN that if no diplomatic solution is found by the end of August, they are prepared to reinstate sanctions imposed by the UN on Iran over its nuclear program.
The three European powers are “committed to use all diplomatic tools at our disposal to ensure Iran does not develop a nuclear weapon” unless Tehran complies with the deadline, according to the letter addressed to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council.
The so-called E3 group’s foreign ministers have threatened to employ a “snapback mechanism” that was included in an international agreement with Iran in 2015 that reduced sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council.
