Troy Aikman, a former quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, discovered the hard way on Sunday night and Monday morning that social media is forever and that time goes by very quickly.
Following a season in which he completed 50 touchdown passes, Aikman tried to temper the excitement around Patrick Mahomes in an article published on X in September 2019. Mahomes led the Chiefs to a 4-0 record on September 29, 2019, with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions.
“ICYMI: ‘Patrick Mahomes has thrown 36% of Troy Aikman’s career touchdowns, in about 8% of the games,'” stated the Kansas City X account of The Athletic. They advertised a single podcast interview.
In response, Aikman said, “iCYMI: Talk to me when he has 33% of my Super Bowl Titles.”
After almost five years, Mahomes has won every Super Bowl that Aikman won, plus some.
The Chiefs quarterback, who led Kansas City to a Super Bowl triumph on Sunday, 25–22, over the San Francisco 49ers in overtime, cemented his place among the game’s all-time greats.
Aikman, naturally, found out about it on social media.
Journalist Roland Martin said on X, “Well, @PatrickMahomes now has three Super Bowl rings, Troy.”
“100% with three MVPs. Sorry,” tweeted Andreas Hale of SiriusXM.

“Patrick Mahomes has won 100% of his Super Bowls in roughly 58% of his career games and thrown 132% of Troy Aikman’s passing touchdowns,” Shehan Jeyarajah of CBS Sports noted.
“Narrator: Patrick Mahomes would go on to earn 100% of Troy Aikman’s Super Bowl Titles before turning 29 years old,” the Kansas City Sports Network account continued.
On Monday, Aikman praised the Chiefs.
“To Andy Reid, Patrick Mahomes, the Hunt family, and the whole Kansas City Chiefs organization, congratulations. What a fantastic run they’re having!”
