A US-based Rwandan beekeeper has been detained for allegedly taking part in the 1994 Rwandan genocide.
The Justice Department reported that Faustin Nsabumukunzi was charged with carrying out “heinous acts of violence abroad” while he was a local leader at the beginning of the genocide.
When the 65-year-old suspect arrived in the United States in 2003, he was also accused of attempted naturalization fraud and visa fraud. He was freed on bond after entering a not guilty plea to the allegations.
“Nsabumukunzi repeatedly lied to conceal his involvement in the horrific Rwandan genocide while seeking to become a lawful permanent resident and citizen of the United States,” said federal prosecutor John Durham.
