Greater Manchester Police (GMP) officers opened an investigation into the party’s deputy leader earlier this year after hearing rumors that, although she registered to vote nearby under her own name, she may have lived primarily at her then-husband’s address in Stockport, potentially in violation of electoral laws.
However, they launched an investigation after receiving a complaint from Tory MP James Daly, who informed them of neighbours’ allegations that refuted the Labour MP’s assertions.
The force has now issued a statement stating that it has carried out “a thorough, carefully considered, and proportionate investigation [and] have concluded that no further police action will be taken”.
The Conservative Party has a history of using this strategy, she claimed, by referring political rivals to the police during election campaigns in an attempt to divert attention from their appalling record.
“The public have had enough of these desperate tactics from a Tory government with nothing else to say after 14 years of failure.”
“I am grateful to all those who have stood by and supported me and my family,” the deputy leader continued. Right now, my main goal is to ensure that Britain gets the change it needs by electing a Labour government.”
However, a spokesman for the Conservative Party stated: “Rayner still hasn’t offered an explanation, as noted by tax expert and Labour Party member Dan Neidle.
