The “deepest funding cuts ever” prompted the United Nations to announce on Monday that it was severely reducing its plans for humanitarian relief around the world.
In a “hyper-prioritized” application, the UN’s humanitarian agency said in a statement that it was requesting $29 billion in funds instead of the $44 billion that was asked in December.
The world’s largest donor, the United States, drastically reduced its foreign aid under President Donald Trump, who took office in January. This had a devastating effect on the humanitarian aid industry worldwide.
Due to an uncertain economic outlook, several donor nations have reduced their contributions.
