It happened after France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard spit chewing gum at Belgium’s David Goffin during a match.
Iga Swiatek, the reigning women’s champion, begged supporters not to yell during points on Wednesday.
“First of all, we are happy people are very enthusiastic about watching tennis and being part of the matches, showing feelings and emotions,” Mauresmo added.
“However, there are certain actions that shouldn’t be taken any farther. Several measures have to be implemented.”
She continued: “Alcohol has been allowed up until now in the stands – but that’s over.”
Although it will not be permitted in the stands, alcohol will still be sold on the concourses and throughout the property.
Chair umpires will be more stern in their requests for respect “to the players and to the game,” in addition to the alcohol restriction in the fans, according to Mauresmo.
To try to calm people down, more security has been put in place, and offenders will be recognized and cautioned.
Former world champion Mauresmo declared, “We will not tolerate overstepping these two things.”
“Being an optimist, I believe that people will respond positively. If not, we’ll take additional action.”
