In Dortmund on Wednesday night, the Three Lions defeated the Netherlands 2-1 to secure their place in Sunday’s championship matchup with Spain.
After competing at Wembley in the 1966 World Cup final and the 2021 Euro final, the men’s team is making its first final outside of England, while the women’s team won the 2022 Euro championship at home.
While Spain has won the European Championship three times, England’s men have only won major silverware once, from their World Cup victory in 1966.
“I think it’s hugely significant for English football,” Lineker, who will host Sunday’s coverage.
They were in the final, the final Euro final, at Wembley, of course, and it ended in bitter disappointment [losing to Italy on penalties].
They are about to make history, so this will be challenging and difficult. No English football team has ever triumphed in a major international competition.”
The last time a senior England team has gone on to win a major event away from home was in 2023, when Spain defeated the Lionesses in the Australia World Cup final.
