ISLAMABAD: Pakistan vehemently denounced on Sunday the actions of an extremist gang that targeted its consulate in Frankfurt, Germany, as well as the German government’s inability to ensure the safety and security of the consular facility.
The announcement from the Foreign Office was made one day after some Afghan citizens broke into and stormed the Pakistani consulate, throwing stones at the structure and taking down the national flag.
The statement claimed that in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963, the host government is in charge of guarding the property and making sure diplomats are secure.
“We are conveying our strong protest to the German government and urge it to take immediate measures to fulfil its responsibilities under the Vienna Conventions,” said the Foreign Office.
Pakistan further requested that the German authorities act quickly to apprehend and prosecute individuals connected to yesterday’s event and penalize those accountable for the security shortcomings.
The incident was captured on camera, and the footage of the Afghan citizens breaking into the Pakistani consulate went viral online. They reportedly attempted to burn the Pakistani flag as well.
Media sources state that the situation has attracted a lot of attention from worldwide communities, which has led to worries regarding the sites’ diplomatic security.
