Every competitor received a new Olympic-themed Samsung flip phone, which is available online for £1,049.
One Team GB athlete, however, has taken full advantage of the offer.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, participants received a free phone, which rower Imogen Grant used “every day” until it broke.
In a TikTok video, the user stated, “I’ve been desperately trying to get [the Tokyo phone] to last, because I was crossing my fingers and…”
Fortunately for Grant, this year’s goodie bags did include a phone.
The devices also play a unique role in Olympic medal ceremonies. After earning their medals, participants on the podium are given one of the phones to shoot a triumph selfie.
According to Samsung, the selfies are intended to enable players “create and share new, more personal memories of the celebration atop the podium”.
The goodie bags also included shampoos, water bottles, and gift cards, but there’s much more high-tech stuff available online from Paris.
