The National Assembly and Senate enacted a bill that would have outlawed marriages between people under the age of 18, but the Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) rejected it, saying that the set age limit did not satisfy them.
Dr. Raghib Hussain Naeemi chaired a meeting of the Islamic Ideology Council on Tuesday, where members engaged in a lengthy discussion of the 18-year benchmark and the age of puberty. The Council was not persuaded to establish 18 as the legal marriage age.
According to sources, the Council emphasized that marriage should be examined from social, cultural, and theological viewpoints while also acknowledging the importance of addressing moral and social challenges in society.
