According to rebel spokespeople and a youth leader from his party, former Democratic Republic of the Congo President Joseph Kabila has returned to the country for the first time in two years, landing in the rebel-held eastern city of Goma.
Senators revoked Kabila’s immunity due to his suspected support for the M23 rebel group, which is backed by Rwanda and has been battling the Congolese army.
Kabila recently criticized the legal system, saying it was “exploited for political ends.” Kabila has previously denied any connections to the rebel organization.
After his father, Laurent, was shot dead in 2001, the 53-year-old took over as leader of the Democratic Republic of the Congo for 18 years.
