The yearly storms list is available from September through late August of the following year. It was introduced in 2015 to assist everyone in being ready and safe.
The inclusion of James, Lewis, and Mavis on the updated list is a tribute to influential individuals from the 170-year history of the Met Office.
Group Captain James Stagg, the principal meteorologist who counseled General Dwight Eisenhower on the weather for the D-Day landings, a crucial moment in the Second World War, is honored by James.
Lewis Fry Richardson, who created a theory combining physics and mathematics to provide computer-generated weather forecasts, is honored with the name Lewis.
Mavis acknowledges Mavis Hinds’ accomplishments, as she was involved in the development of the first Met Office computers.
“This year, as we celebrate our 170th birthday, it’s great to be able to honor those who have had an impact on our long history of pioneering weather and climate science services,” stated Will Lang, the Met Office’s lead responder during severe weather.
In addition to Met Eireann in Ireland and KNMI, the Dutch weather agency, meteorologists provide names to storms in order to warn people of the potential for severe weather in advance of its arrival.
