After receiving a bomb threat, Singapore’s Air Force dispatched two fighter jets on Tuesday to escort an Air India Express aircraft away from populous areas.
An Air India flight from Delhi to Chicago had to make a precautionary landing at a Canadian airfield just hours earlier.
In India, fake bomb threats against airlines are not uncommon, although it’s unclear what caused the sharp increase that started on Monday.
The emailed officials at the government’s Bureau of Civil Aviation Security and Directorate General of Civil Aviation, but they did not reply.
Flights operated by IndiGo, SpiceJet, Akasa Air, and Air India were also threatened.
Three overseas planes that were scheduled to depart from Mumbai on Monday were either delayed or diverted as a result of threats issued by an X (previously Twitter) profile. In conjunction with this, police have taken a teenager into custody.
Threats from another X handle, which has since been suspended, impacted seven flights on Tuesday, including the two Air India aircraft. Screenshots of a few of the posts reveal that the person mentioned the aircraft number and tagged the airline and local police.
In a statement, Air India stated that it was working with law enforcement to find the individuals responsible for the threats and will take legal action to recoup any losses.
