In order to conduct tax fraud investigations, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has been given broad new authority to access citizens’ phone call logs and internet usage data.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), telecom firms, and internet service providers will now be required by law to divulge customer information upon request.
FBR may now access call data and the internet.
The FBR claims that the recently modified law gives tax commissioners the authority to get user and subscriber data from any telecom or internet provider while conducting an audit and investigation into tax fraud cases. Call logs, subscriber information, technical usage reports, and even import and export data related to the issue being investigated are examples of this type of data.
