A powerful explosion from a car near Delhi’s historic Red Fort on Monday killed eight people and left 20 others injured, triggering a major security response across India. The blast occurred around 7 p.m. when a slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light and suddenly erupted, damaging several nearby cars and auto-rickshaws, according to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha.
Emergency teams rushed to the scene, where mangled vehicles and debris filled the crowded street near a local metro station. Authorities have cordoned off the entire area as investigations continue, with officials examining all possible angles behind the rare incident in the heavily guarded capital.
A former owner of the car, identified only as Salman, has been detained for questioning, Indian media reported. Major transport hubs—including Mumbai’s rail stations and Uttar Pradesh border areas—were placed on high alert following the explosion.
Witnesses described chaos immediately after the blast. One commuter recalled hearing a loud boom before seeing flames erupt, while a shopkeeper said the impact was so strong that he fell to the ground.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to families of the victims and wished a quick recovery for the injured. The US Embassy also issued a security advisory urging American citizens to avoid the Red Fort area and stay vigilant.
The Red Fort, a Mughal-era landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts thousands of visitors daily, heightening concerns following the attack.
