North American Free Trade Deal Faces Uncertain Future as USMCA Review Deadline Arrives The United States, Canada, and Mexico have reached a key milestone in the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). However, trade officials are not expected to finalize any major decisions on the July 1 deadline. Representatives from all three countries will hold formal discussions as part of the scheduled review process. While Canada and Mexico have publicly supported renewing the agreement, the United States has not yet announced its final position. Canada and Mexico Support the Trade Pact Canadian and Mexican leaders continue to back the USMCA, which serves as the foundation for trade across North America. The agreement supports businesses, workers, and industries that rely on cross-border commerce. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently indicated that he does not expect a final agreement to emerge from the current round of discussions. Instead, negotiations are likely to continue in the coming weeks and months. Canadian officials remain focused on protecting domestic industries, workers, and farmers while maintaining strong trade relationships with neighboring countries. Trump's Position Creates Uncertainty US President Donald Trump has raised concerns about the future of the agreement. He recently suggested that the deal could expire and argued that the United States might benefit from pursuing alternative trade arrangements. His comments have increased uncertainty surrounding the review process. As a result, businesses and investors are closely monitoring developments between the three countries. Trade tensions have also intensified due to tariff disputes and retaliatory measures, making negotiations more challenging than many analysts originally expected. Why the USMCA Matters The USMCA replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) during Trump's first presidential term. Since then, it has played a vital role in supporting economic cooperation across North America. The trade pact covers a market of approximately 510 million people and supports nearly $1.6 trillion in annual trade. It also strengthens major industries, including automotive manufacturing, agriculture, and energy production. Many companies depend on the agreement because it reduces trade barriers and helps products move efficiently across borders. Trade Talks Will Continue Beyond July 1 Despite the importance of the July 1 review deadline, all three governments expect negotiations to continue afterward. Officials from the United States and Mexico have already scheduled additional bilateral discussions later this month. Experts believe the review process could extend for several months before the countries reach a clear conclusion regarding the future of the agreement. For now, the USMCA remains in effect and continues to provide significant trade benefits throughout North America. What's Next for North American Trade? The coming months will play a critical role in shaping the future of regional trade. Canada and Mexico remain committed to preserving the agreement, while the United States continues to evaluate its options. Although the July 1 deadline marks an important stage in the review process, it is unlikely to produce an immediate outcome. Instead, ongoing negotiations will determine whether the USMCA continues in its current form or undergoes significant changes.

    # Who Could Be the UK's Next Chancellor? With Sir Keir Starmer stepping down, many political observers expect Andy Burnham to become the next UK prime minister. If Burnham takes office, attention will quickly turn to one of the most important positions in government: the chancellor. The next chancellor will inherit a challenging economic situation. Rising public debt, weak economic growth, welfare reform pressures, increased defence spending, and global uncertainty are all on the agenda. As a result, the choice could have a direct impact on businesses, investors, and households across the UK. ## Wes Streeting Emerges as the Leading Contender Many bookmakers currently see Wes Streeting as the frontrunner for the chancellor role. Streeting previously competed for the Labour leadership but later backed Burnham. His support has led to speculation that he could be rewarded with one of the most powerful jobs in government. However, not everyone supports that idea. Economist Lord Jim O'Neill has suggested that the role should go to the most qualified candidate rather than someone seeking recognition for political loyalty. Although Burnham and Streeting work within the same party, they often differ on economic priorities. Burnham generally supports higher public spending, while Streeting is viewed as more cautious on government finances. Economic analysts describe Streeting as relatively friendly to business and growth. Supporters believe he could reassure financial markets. Critics, however, argue that his long term political ambitions could create challenges in government. ## Ed Miliband Remains a Strong Alternative Another name frequently mentioned is Ed Miliband. The former Labour leader is considered politically closer to Burnham. Many experts believe that strong alignment between the prime minister and chancellor helps create stable economic policy. Miliband brings significant experience to the table. Supporters argue that he has the knowledge and authority needed to guide the economy through difficult times. Some economists believe he could win market confidence by presenting a clear and consistent financial strategy. Others remain concerned about his economic approach. ## Concerns Over Energy Policy Critics often link Miliband's strong support for net zero policies to Britain's relatively high energy costs. Because of this perception, some analysts fear financial markets could react cautiously if he became chancellor. Investors typically look for policies that support stable growth while keeping inflation under control. Miliband has also faced criticism from parts of the trade union movement. Opponents argue that restrictions on new oil and gas projects in the North Sea could limit job creation and investment opportunities. ## Major Challenges Await the Next Chancellor Regardless of who secures the position, the next chancellor will face a difficult task. The UK economy continues to struggle with slow growth and high government borrowing. At the same time, public services require additional funding, while defence spending demands continue to increase. Global tensions and uncertainty in international markets add further pressure. The next chancellor will need to balance economic growth, public spending, and financial stability while maintaining confidence among businesses and investors. ## Final Thoughts The race to become the UK's next chancellor is already attracting significant attention. Wes Streeting and Ed Miliband currently lead the discussion, but the final decision will likely depend on Andy Burnham's broader economic vision. Whoever takes the role will play a crucial part in shaping the UK's financial future during a period of significant economic and political change.

Tom Holland is stepping into a major new role with Christopher Nolan's upcoming epic film The Odyssey. The actor, famous worldwide for playing Spider Man, says this project feels like the beginning of a new stage in his life and career. Holland describes the opportunity as a "pinch me moment" as he takes on the role of Telemachus, the son of Odysseus from Greek mythology. The actor believes the character gives him a rare chance to explore the journey of a young man searching for his identity and his missing father. Tom Holland Plays Telemachus In Christopher Nolan's Epic Film In The Odyssey, Holland portrays Telemachus, the only son of the legendary hero Odysseus. Telemachus was very young when his father left to fight in the Trojan War. Because he grew up without Odysseus, he knows his father mainly through stories about his courage, intelligence, and victories. Holland says he connected with the character because Telemachus represents youth, growth, and the search for answers. The actor, now 30, explains that this role feels special because it may be one of his final opportunities to play a younger character. A New Experience Beyond Spider Man Although Holland became a global star through the Spider Man franchise, The Odyssey allows him to explore a different kind of character. The film shows Telemachus facing challenges inside his family's palace while trying to protect his mother Penelope from unwanted attention from powerful men known as the suitors. Holland shares the screen with a talented cast, including Anne Hathaway, who plays Penelope, the wife of Odysseus and mother of Telemachus. Zendaya Joins The Film As Goddess Athena Holland's wife, Zendaya, also appears in The Odyssey as Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. However, the couple does not share scenes together in the movie. Holland reveals that he read the script with Zendaya before production began. Later, when Christopher Nolan asked if he would be comfortable with Zendaya playing Athena, Holland supported the idea. He says the moment became a special memory for both of them. According to Holland, Zendaya reacted with a small smile before they both celebrated the news together. Tom Holland's Future With The Odyssey With The Odyssey, Tom Holland is moving beyond his superhero image and exploring a more mature acting challenge. The role of Telemachus represents a journey of family, identity, and personal growth. For Holland, the film marks an important turning point in his career and a memorable step into a new chapter.

However, some experts worry that handing over these tasks to AI could reduce how much our brains are working. The concern is not about convenience, but about long-term effects on thinking skills.

MIT Study Raises Cognitive Concerns

Earlier this year, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology published a study examining how AI affects learning. The study found that participants who used ChatGPT to write essays showed lower activity in brain areas linked to cognitive processing.

These participants also struggled to recall or quote their own writing. In contrast, those who completed essays without AI support showed stronger engagement and memory.

The researchers said their findings highlight the need to examine whether frequent AI use could reduce learning ability over time.

How the Research Was Conducted

The study involved 54 participants from MIT and nearby universities. Researchers recorded brain activity using electroencephalography, or EEG, which measures signals through electrodes placed on the scalp.

Participants used AI for tasks such as summarising questions, finding sources, and correcting grammar. Some also used it to generate ideas, although several users felt AI performed poorly in this area.

Workplace Studies Show Similar Risks

Concerns are not limited to education. A joint study by Carnegie Mellon University and Microsoft examined how AI affects decision-making at work.

The researchers surveyed 319 white-collar workers who used AI tools at least once a week. They analysed 900 examples of tasks given to AI, including data analysis and rule checking.

The study found that higher trust in AI was linked to lower critical thinking effort. Researchers warned that long-term reliance could weaken independent problem-solving skills.

School Students Share Mixed Experiences

A separate study by Oxford University Press surveyed UK schoolchildren. It found that six in ten students believed AI had negatively affected their school-related skills.

At the same time, nine in ten said AI helped them improve at least one skill. These included creativity, revision, or problem-solving. About one quarter said AI made completing work too easy.

Dr Alexandra Tomescu, a generative AI specialist at OUP, said the findings show a mixed picture. She added that many students want clearer guidance on how to use AI properly.

Guidance Still Falls Short

ChatGPT now has more than 800 million weekly users, according to OpenAI chief Sam Altman. The company has published a list of prompts designed to help students learn more effectively.

However, Professor Wayne Holmes from University College London believes this is not enough. He says there is still no independent evidence at scale proving AI tools are safe or effective in education.

He argues that more research is needed before students are encouraged to rely on them.

Better Results but Less Learning?

Professor Holmes points to research on cognitive atrophy. This occurs when skills decline due to over-reliance on tools.

He cites a Harvard Medical School study on radiologists using AI to read X-rays. While AI improved performance for some clinicians, it reduced accuracy for others.

The concern is that students may submit better-looking work while understanding less. As Professor Holmes puts it, output may improve, but learning may suffer.

How AI Should Be Used in Education

Jayna Devani, who leads international education at OpenAI, says the company does not support using ChatGPT to outsource work.

She believes AI works best as a tutor rather than an answer generator. In study mode, the tool can break down complex questions and guide understanding step by step.

This can be helpful when students need support outside normal teaching hours.

The Need for Informed Use

Despite its potential, experts agree AI must be used carefully. Professor Holmes stresses that students should understand how AI systems work and how data is handled.

He also advises checking results and questioning outputs. AI, he says, is not just a more advanced calculator.

Used wisely, AI can support learning. Used blindly, it risks weakening the very skills education aims to build.
