KARACHI: Questions concerning judge eligibility, provincial representation, and procedural nuances have surfaced in light of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan’s (JCP) meeting on Tuesday to select judges for the constitutional benches. Some legal experts have also brought up unresolved issues with seniority, appointment sequence, and the relationship between the commission and bench formation.
On November 5, Chief Justice Yahya Afridi called the JCP’s first meeting to consider selecting justices for the constitutional benches of the Supreme Court.
Establishing the JCP secretariat and choosing judges for the constitutional benches will be the main agenda items for Tuesday’s meeting. Following the 26th Amendment to the Constitution, which provides reforms permitting a parliamentary committee to choose the CJP, the panel was recently reorganized to include parliamentary members.
