UN Warns of Cash Shortage by Mid 2026
The United Nations is facing a serious financial crisis that could push the organization toward collapse. Secretary General António Guterres warned that the situation is urgent and could worsen within months if member states do not act.
In a letter sent to all 193 UN member countries, Guterres said the UN may run out of money by July. He stressed that unpaid membership fees are disrupting core operations and threatening vital programs worldwide.
Unpaid Fees Trigger System Wide Crisis
Guterres explained that many countries have failed to pay their required contributions. These payments fund the UN’s regular budget and peacekeeping missions. He said the problem is not new, but the current scale makes it far more dangerous.
By the end of 2025, unpaid fees reached a record level. According to the secretary general, 77 percent of the total assessed contributions remained unpaid. This has weakened the entire UN financial system.
Rules Force UN to Return Money It Never Received
The crisis has worsened due to UN financial rules. These rules require the organization to return unused funds when projects cannot move forward. Guterres said this creates a double burden.
The UN is now refunding money that never entered its accounts. In January alone, the organization returned 227 million dollars as part of the 2026 budget process. Guterres made it clear that this system no longer works under current conditions.
US Funding Cuts Deepen the Crisis
The United States, the UN’s largest contributor, has played a major role in the shortfall. The US refused to pay its 2025 regular budget contribution and provided only 30 percent of expected peacekeeping funds.
President Donald Trump has criticized the UN, calling it inefficient and misaligned with US priorities. In January, his administration withdrew from 31 UN agencies and other international bodies. The US also officially left the World Health Organization last week after refusing to pay its dues.
Although the US pledged 2 billion dollars for humanitarian aid in late 2025, the amount is far lower than previous years.
Aid Cuts Affect Vulnerable Communities Worldwide
Other countries, including the UK and Germany, have also reduced foreign aid. These cuts have forced UN agencies to scale back critical work.
The UN human rights office has warned that it cannot document serious abuses due to lack of funds. UN Women has closed maternity clinics in Afghanistan, where maternal death rates remain among the highest in the world. The World Food Programme has reduced food rations for refugees fleeing the Sudan conflict.
Guterres Calls for Immediate Action
Guterres urged member states to meet their legal obligations under the UN Charter. He said countries must either pay their dues on time or agree to major financial reforms.
He warned that without swift action, the UN will struggle to carry out its mission and protect millions of people who rely on its support.
