Google is giving people more control over their personal data online. Its “Results About You” feature, previously limited to names, phone numbers, emails, and home addresses, will soon track sensitive information like passport details, driver’s licenses, and Social Security numbers.
When users spot this information online, they can request Google to remove the relevant search results, helping prevent identity theft.
How the Tracking Works
To use the new feature, users must register the specific personal information they want to monitor with Google. For example, to track a driver’s license online, a person must provide Google with their license number.
Google ensures the process is secure, using strong encryption and strict privacy protocols. The company emphasized that these measures protect users from misuse while monitoring their information.
Initial Availability and Future Plans
The expanded feature will launch first in the United States, with plans to roll it out to other regions later. Google said it will continue improving the tool to help users manage their online personal information more effectively.
Rising Concerns Over Identity Theft
Identity theft remains a major issue in the US, with more than 1.1 million cases reported to the Federal Trade Commission last year. Credit card fraud is the most common form, followed closely by identity theft for employment, medical care, or access to government benefits.
By expanding this tool, Google aims to give users more power to protect themselves against these growing threats.
