The quiet town of Tumbler Ridge is mourning after a tragic school shooting claimed several lives. Police have identified the 18 year old suspect and shared new details about the timeline and investigation.
Shooting Began at a Nearby Home
Authorities say the violence started at a residence near Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. After the incident at the home, the suspect went to the school and opened fire.
At around 1:30 pm local time on Tuesday, police received reports of an active shooter inside the school. Officers reached the scene within two minutes. They heard gunfire as they arrived and immediately entered the building.
Within minutes, officers located the suspect. Police say the 18 year old died from a self inflicted gunshot wound.
Victims Identified
The victims at the school include a 39 year old female educator, three 12 year old girls, one 12 year old boy, and a 13 year old boy. Two injured victims were airlifted to hospital and remain under medical care.
The small community has about 2,400 residents. The secondary school serves around 160 students from Grades 7 to 12. Many families know each other well, which has made the tragedy even more painful.
Suspect Background and Police History
Police identified the suspect as Jesse Van Rootselaar. Officials confirmed that Jesse was born male and began transitioning to female about six years ago.
Authorities say the suspect had previous contact with police. Officers visited the family home several times over the years, and some calls involved mental health concerns.
The suspect once held a valid gun licence, but it had expired. Police recovered two firearms at the scene, a long gun and a modified handgun. Investigators are still working to determine how each weapon was used.
The suspect had dropped out of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School four years ago.
