De Niro shares fears about the country’s direction
Actor Robert De Niro became emotional during a recent podcast interview as he spoke about President Donald Trump and the future of the United States. Fighting back tears, the 82 year old actor said Americans must stand up and push back against the current administration.
He appeared on the podcast hosted by Nicolle Wallace, where the conversation quickly turned to politics. Wallace praised De Niro for being a strong voice in New York City and asked what concerns him most about the country right now.
De Niro said he fears retaliation against people in New York and suggested that federal immigration agents could be sent into the city. He warned that the political movement behind Trump will not simply fade away, even if Trump himself is no longer in office.
“Resist, resist, resist”
During the interview, De Niro repeatedly said that people must “resist.” He stressed that there is no easy solution and no quick fix. According to him, change will only happen if citizens take action themselves.
He argued that parts of the political movement supporting Trump remain strong and deeply rooted. That, he said, is what worries him most. In his view, Americans must come together to protect the country and defend democratic values.
An emotional moment
At one point, Wallace brought up De Niro’s 1981 Academy Award speech, where he thanked and uplifted the people around him. When she asked why lifting others up matters so much to him, he became visibly emotional.
“You have to bring people together,” he said, as he began to cry. He added that division only leads to more problems and that unity is the only way forward.
De Niro also described the current political climate as a defining moment. He compared it to running through fire, saying that people must act bravely if they want to secure their future.
Throughout the discussion, he returned to one core message: Americans cannot stay silent. In his words, they must continue to resist if they want to protect the country.
