The NBA is taking early steps toward adding two new teams, with Seattle and Las Vegas seen as the strongest options right now. If this move goes ahead, the league would grow from 30 teams to 32.
Seattle Could Get Its NBA Team Back
Seattle might finally see NBA basketball return after losing the SuperSonics in 2008, when the team moved and became the Oklahoma City Thunder.
If expansion happens, Seattle is widely expected to bring back the SuperSonics name and identity. The city already has a strong sports scene, with the Seahawks, Mariners, and Kraken all playing in major US leagues.
Seattle also has a proud NBA history, including the SuperSonics’ championship win in 1979.
Las Vegas Is Becoming a Major Sports City
Las Vegas has never had an NBA team, but it has quickly turned into a big sports market.
It already hosts the NHL’s Golden Knights and the NFL’s Raiders. MLB’s Athletics are also set to move there in 2028. The WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces are already based in the city and are doing well.
The NBA has also been active in Las Vegas for years through summer league games and special events.
What Happens Next
The plan is not final yet. Any expansion would need approval from at least 23 of the NBA’s 30 governors.
If approved, both new teams would likely join the Western Conference. That could also lead to one team moving to the Eastern Conference to keep things balanced.
Reports say new owners could need to pay between 7 billion and 10 billion dollars for a franchise.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said the league is still in the early stage of exploring the idea and will now speak with potential investors.
