Raghu Rai: The photographer who helped India see itself Rich tributes continue after the passing of Raghu Rai at the age of 83. He stood as one of India’s most respected photojournalists. Over more than five decades, he documented the country with depth, honesty, and sharp visual clarity. His photographs did more than record events. They helped people understand them. His work influenced how India viewed its political shifts, cultural icons, and social struggles. Early career and rise in photojournalism Raghu Rai began his professional journey in 1966 with The Statesman newspaper. He quickly developed a strong eye for real life moments. His work later expanded into editorial roles at India Today and Sunday magazine. He joined Magnum Photos in 1977. This step marked a major point in his career. Henri Cartier Bresson supported his entry, and this connection shaped his visual style and thinking. Political history through his lens Rai documented key political moments in India with rare access and sensitivity. His photographs of Indira Gandhi stand among his most recognized work. He captured her in public rallies, campaign trails, and private party meetings. He focused on expression, body language, and atmosphere rather than staged poses. His images gave the public a closer view of political power and decision making in India. Documenting conflict and crisis Raghu Rai also covered some of India’s most difficult periods. He worked in Bhopal after the gas tragedy and captured its human impact. He also documented Punjab during the militancy period in the 1980s, where violence affected thousands of lives. His photographs from these events carried emotional weight. He showed suffering, tension, and resilience without turning away from uncomfortable realities. Portraits of culture and creativity Rai photographed many well known cultural figures including Lata Mangeshkar, Satyajit Ray, M F Hussain, and Amitabh Bachchan. He focused on natural expressions and real interaction rather than formal staging. His portraits often revealed respect between the subject and their audience. He captured the human side of fame and creativity. A philosophy beyond technique Raghu Rai often described photography as more than skill or equipment. He treated it as a way to observe life closely and truthfully. His approach shaped generations of photographers in India and beyond. His work continues to influence visual storytelling today.

Rose Dugdale: From Heiress to Infamous IRA Art Heist Figure Bridget Rose Dugdale was born into wealth and privilege in 1941, with a future that seemed fully planned. She grew up surrounded by luxury, received private tutoring from a French governess, and attended elite finishing schools across Europe. Like many young women from aristocratic families, she entered high society as a debutante and was presented to the Queen. Her life appeared set for tradition, comfort, and status. But Dugdale chose a very different path. A Rejection of Privilege As she entered adulthood, Dugdale began to question the world she was raised in. She felt uneasy about the lavish lifestyle and strict social expectations. The “Season,” a formal series of elite social events designed to introduce young women into society, only deepened her discomfort. She later criticized her own coming-out ball, describing it as excessive and wasteful. The event, she said, cost as much as what dozens of elderly people might live on for months. That realization marked a turning point. Dugdale started distancing herself from her privileged background. A Radical Shift in Beliefs By her mid-30s, Dugdale had completely broken away from her former life. She gave away her inheritance and even took money from her own family to support causes she believed in. Her views became strongly anti-establishment, and she aligned herself with Irish republican ideals. Her actions soon moved beyond protest. Dugdale became involved with the Irish Republican Army (IRA), a militant group engaged in conflict over Northern Ireland. She participated in direct operations, including a helicopter hijacking used to attack a police station. This act shocked many, given her elite upbringing. One of History’s Largest Art Heists In April 1974, Dugdale took part in a major art theft that gained global attention. The group targeted a wealthy estate and stole valuable paintings. During the robbery, they removed artworks directly from their frames, causing damage in the process. The stolen collection included works of major cultural and financial value. This operation became known as one of the largest art heists ever carried out. Dugdale’s involvement placed her firmly at the center of the crime. It also showed how far she had moved from her earlier life of formality and tradition. From Socialite to Militant Operative Dugdale’s transformation did not stop at theft. She later became involved in developing explosives for IRA operations. Her journey from aristocrat to militant activist remains one of the most unusual personal shifts in modern history. Her story reflects a deep ideological change. She rejected wealth, status, and comfort in favor of political struggle and radical action.

From Scientist to Silk Farmer: A New Chapter in India’s Sericulture Industry A Bold Career Shift Dr. Jolapuram Umamaheswari made a life-changing decision six years ago. She left her career as a scientist in Singapore and returned to India. At that time, she had no job. Still, she was clear about one thing, she wanted independence and control over her work. Instead of looking for another research role, she explored different options. After careful study, she chose silk farming, also known as sericulture. This field combines biology, agriculture, and business. For her, it felt like a natural extension of her scientific background. Turning Science into Practice Sericulture involves raising silkworms on mulberry leaves. Farmers then collect the cocoons and extract silk fibers. Although the process sounds simple, it requires precision and care. In the beginning, Umamaheswari faced several problems. Diseases affected the silkworms. Yields were inconsistent. Managing a living system also required constant attention. These early challenges tested her patience. However, she used her scientific knowledge to improve her methods. She focused on better hygiene. She refined feeding practices. She also controlled the environment more carefully. Over time, these small changes made a big difference. Consistent Growth and Stable Income Today, her hard work has paid off. She produces around 10 batches of silk each year. Each cycle takes about 25 to 30 days. This allows her to maintain a steady production flow. She now earns nearly $1,000 per month. The income feels stable, almost like a regular salary. This is one of the biggest advantages of sericulture. Unlike many farming activities, it does not depend only on seasons. Umamaheswari believes silk farming offers reliable returns when managed properly. Her journey shows how science can support agriculture in practical ways. It also highlights new opportunities in India’s growing silk industry.

OpenAI Shuts Down Sora AI Video Tool and Ends Disney Deal OpenAI has officially closed its AI video-generation platform Sora, less than two years after its high-profile launch in 2024. The company has also ended its planned $1 billion partnership with The Walt Disney Company, signaling a major shift in strategy. Why OpenAI Pulled the Plug on Sora OpenAI said it shut down Sora to focus on other areas, especially robotics and advanced AI systems that can handle real-world tasks. The company is now investing in “agentic” AI, which can complete tasks with minimal human input. Sora gained global attention for its ability to create realistic videos from simple text prompts. Despite that early hype, the platform struggled to turn popularity into profit. Reports show it generated only $1.4 million in revenue, while ChatGPT brought in nearly $1.9 billion during the same period. Low Revenue and Rising Risks Experts pointed to weak monetization as a key issue. Some analysts described Sora as expensive to maintain with little financial return. At the same time, the platform faced ongoing challenges. These included misuse, deepfake concerns, and copyright violations. It became difficult to control harmful or misleading content. This added legal and reputational risks for the company. Competition also increased in the AI video space. New tools, including platforms like Seedance, began producing similar high-quality videos. Some even sparked controversy by generating clips featuring well-known fictional characters. Disney Partnership Comes to an End The closure of Sora also ends OpenAI’s agreement with Disney. The deal allowed users to create videos using popular characters like Mickey Mouse and Star Wars figures. It was seen as a major step in linking AI with Hollywood. However, the partnership raised concerns across the media industry. Many feared AI tools could replace creative professionals. Reports suggest no financial transactions were completed before the deal was canceled. Disney has said it will now explore other AI partnerships. The company aims to use AI responsibly while protecting intellectual property rights. What’s Next for OpenAI OpenAI is now shifting focus toward building smarter AI systems and robotics. The same technology used in Sora may help train machines to perform physical tasks. The company confirmed that image-generation tools inside ChatGPT will continue to operate as usual.

Senegal Appeals AFCON Final Decision as CAS Speeds Up Review Senegal has taken its Africa Cup of Nations final dispute to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which says it will handle the case as quickly as possible. The team had originally beaten Morocco 1-0 in the final on 18 January. But that result didn’t stand for long. It was later changed to a 3-0 win for Morocco after a controversial turn of events. What Happened in the Final Tension rose in the final moments of the match when Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty. Senegal’s players strongly disagreed and walked off the pitch in protest. They did return later, but the damage was already done. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation filed a complaint after the match. The Confederation of African Football reviewed the situation and ruled that Senegal had forfeited the game. As a result, the scoreline was officially recorded as 3-0 in Morocco’s favor. Senegal Fights Back Senegal is not backing down. The team has appealed the decision and wants the title restored. CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb said they know how important this case is for both teams and fans. He added that the process will move quickly, but both sides will still get a fair chance to present their case. There is no exact timeline yet for when the final decision will be announced. What Happens Next According to sports expert Raymond Hack, the case could take several months to settle. If that happens, it may still be ongoing during the World Cup. For now, everything depends on CAS. Senegal waits, hoping the decision goes in their favor.

Mohamed Salah Transfer Options: Saudi Arabia or MLS Move Possible Mohamed Salah’s future is becoming a major talking point as interest grows from outside Europe. Saudi Arabia and the United States now look like the strongest options if he decides to leave Liverpool. Saudi Arabia emerges as the top option Saudi Arabia stands out as the most likely destination. Clubs in the Saudi Pro League already view Salah as a major global name and a key figure for the league’s growth. Al Ittihad previously tried to sign him with a £150 million offer in 2023, but Liverpool rejected it at the time. That move came when Jurgen Klopp was still manager, before Arne Slot later guided Liverpool to a Premier League title with Salah playing a key role. Now, Salah could leave on a free transfer, and Saudi clubs are expected to return with strong interest. The main contenders include Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad, and Al Ahli, all backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. Al Qadsiah, linked with former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers and supported by Aramco, could also join the race. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire says money will not be a problem. He notes that Cristiano Ronaldo earns around £170 million a year in Saudi Arabia, while Salah earns close to £20 million at Liverpool. He also says regional tensions may still affect any final decision. MLS offers a different path The United States is another realistic option for Salah. Major League Soccer has grown fast and already attracted global stars like Lionel Messi. MLS uses a salary cap system, but clubs can sign elite players through the Designated Player rule, often called the Beckham rule. This system has helped bring players like David Beckham, Lionel Messi, and Luis Suárez to the league. Messi earns around $20 million in salary at Inter Miami, but his total income is much higher due to commercial deals and ownership benefits. MLS commissioner Don Garber has already shown interest in Salah. He has said the league would welcome him and encouraged him to speak with Messi and Thomas Müller about their experience in the United States. Clubs such as Inter Miami, LA Galaxy, and Los Angeles FC have the financial power and global reach to sign a player of Salah’s level. What comes next for Salah Saudi Arabia offers the strongest financial package and regional influence. The MLS offers global branding, lifestyle appeal, and strong commercial opportunities. Both leagues are now realistic options if Salah decides to move away from Europe

Hospital Apology After Child Death During Biopsy in UK Hospital Case Overview A hospital trust in the UK has apologised after the death of a three year old boy during a medical biopsy in 2023. The child, Aarav Chopra from Wolverhampton, was already facing serious health challenges after a liver transplant. He was undergoing a routine biopsy at Birmingham Children’s Hospital when a complication occurred. A blood vessel was damaged, which led to severe internal bleeding and later a cardiac arrest. What Went Wrong A coroner investigated the case and concluded that the death was contributed to by neglect. The report also stated that the outcome could have been avoided with better care and supervision. Concerns were raised about the level of experience of a trainee doctor involved in the procedure. The family was not clearly informed about the trainee’s role at the time. This lack of communication became a major concern during the investigation. The coroner also highlighted confusion about the trainee’s training level. Staff believed the doctor was more experienced than they actually were, which added to the safety concerns. Family Response The child’s parents shared their grief and described the loss as unbearable. They said they trusted the hospital to provide safe care and never expected such a tragic outcome from a routine procedure. They also said important details were not shared with them during the treatment process, including the involvement of a trainee doctor. Hospital Statement and Action The hospital trust accepted that the expected standards of care were not met. It issued an apology to the family and confirmed that changes have been made to improve patient safety. A formal prevention of future deaths report was also issued. It called for stronger supervision systems and clearer communication about medical staff roles during procedures. Key Lessons From the Case This case highlights the importance of clear supervision in medical training environments. It also shows how communication with families must be transparent, especially during high risk procedures.

Dozens of bodies found in Kericho grave shock investigators Large number of bodies uncovered Authorities in western Kenya have recovered about 32 bodies from a mass grave in Kericho. The dead include seven adults and 25 children, most of them infants and foetuses. Investigators also found scattered body parts at the site. The discovery started after police received a court order to dig up 14 suspected graves. A whistleblower later led them to a much larger burial site. Bodies found in sacks and unusual conditions A government pathologist, Richard Njoroge, said the scene raised many questions. He noted that several bodies were found inside sacks, which is not normal for burials. He also said the condition of the remains was not the same. Some were badly decomposed, while others were more preserved. This suggests they may have been buried at different times. Officials believe some bodies could have come from hospitals or mortuaries, but this still needs confirmation. Questions over burial process and location Investigators are now trying to understand how the bodies ended up on land linked to the National Council of Churches of Kenya. The organisation has denied any involvement and said the burial was done without approval. Early findings from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations show that 13 unclaimed bodies were released from a hospital in Nyamira County and taken for burial. However, this does not explain the extra bodies found at the site. Arrests and ongoing investigation Police have arrested a public health officer and a cemetery caretaker. Several other people are being questioned as the investigation continues. Human rights groups have called the discovery deeply disturbing. They are demanding a full and transparent investigation. Legal experts are also urging authorities to identify the victims as quickly as possible so families can get answers. Links to earlier mass deaths in Kenya This case has brought back memories of a similar tragedy in 2023 in the Shakahola forest near Malindi. Hundreds of bodies were found there in connection with a religious cult case. Authorities continue to investigate whether there is any wider pattern behind these recent discoveries.
