Raghu Rai: The photographer who helped India see itself Rich tributes continue after the passing of Raghu Rai at the age of 83. He stood as one of India’s most respected photojournalists. Over more than five decades, he documented the country with depth, honesty, and sharp visual clarity. His photographs did more than record events. They helped people understand them. His work influenced how India viewed its political shifts, cultural icons, and social struggles. Early career and rise in photojournalism Raghu Rai began his professional journey in 1966 with The Statesman newspaper. He quickly developed a strong eye for real life moments. His work later expanded into editorial roles at India Today and Sunday magazine. He joined Magnum Photos in 1977. This step marked a major point in his career. Henri Cartier Bresson supported his entry, and this connection shaped his visual style and thinking. Political history through his lens Rai documented key political moments in India with rare access and sensitivity. His photographs of Indira Gandhi stand among his most recognized work. He captured her in public rallies, campaign trails, and private party meetings. He focused on expression, body language, and atmosphere rather than staged poses. His images gave the public a closer view of political power and decision making in India. Documenting conflict and crisis Raghu Rai also covered some of India’s most difficult periods. He worked in Bhopal after the gas tragedy and captured its human impact. He also documented Punjab during the militancy period in the 1980s, where violence affected thousands of lives. His photographs from these events carried emotional weight. He showed suffering, tension, and resilience without turning away from uncomfortable realities. Portraits of culture and creativity Rai photographed many well known cultural figures including Lata Mangeshkar, Satyajit Ray, M F Hussain, and Amitabh Bachchan. He focused on natural expressions and real interaction rather than formal staging. His portraits often revealed respect between the subject and their audience. He captured the human side of fame and creativity. A philosophy beyond technique Raghu Rai often described photography as more than skill or equipment. He treated it as a way to observe life closely and truthfully. His approach shaped generations of photographers in India and beyond. His work continues to influence visual storytelling today.

Rose Dugdale: From Heiress to Infamous IRA Art Heist Figure Bridget Rose Dugdale was born into wealth and privilege in 1941, with a future that seemed fully planned. She grew up surrounded by luxury, received private tutoring from a French governess, and attended elite finishing schools across Europe. Like many young women from aristocratic families, she entered high society as a debutante and was presented to the Queen. Her life appeared set for tradition, comfort, and status. But Dugdale chose a very different path. A Rejection of Privilege As she entered adulthood, Dugdale began to question the world she was raised in. She felt uneasy about the lavish lifestyle and strict social expectations. The “Season,” a formal series of elite social events designed to introduce young women into society, only deepened her discomfort. She later criticized her own coming-out ball, describing it as excessive and wasteful. The event, she said, cost as much as what dozens of elderly people might live on for months. That realization marked a turning point. Dugdale started distancing herself from her privileged background. A Radical Shift in Beliefs By her mid-30s, Dugdale had completely broken away from her former life. She gave away her inheritance and even took money from her own family to support causes she believed in. Her views became strongly anti-establishment, and she aligned herself with Irish republican ideals. Her actions soon moved beyond protest. Dugdale became involved with the Irish Republican Army (IRA), a militant group engaged in conflict over Northern Ireland. She participated in direct operations, including a helicopter hijacking used to attack a police station. This act shocked many, given her elite upbringing. One of History’s Largest Art Heists In April 1974, Dugdale took part in a major art theft that gained global attention. The group targeted a wealthy estate and stole valuable paintings. During the robbery, they removed artworks directly from their frames, causing damage in the process. The stolen collection included works of major cultural and financial value. This operation became known as one of the largest art heists ever carried out. Dugdale’s involvement placed her firmly at the center of the crime. It also showed how far she had moved from her earlier life of formality and tradition. From Socialite to Militant Operative Dugdale’s transformation did not stop at theft. She later became involved in developing explosives for IRA operations. Her journey from aristocrat to militant activist remains one of the most unusual personal shifts in modern history. Her story reflects a deep ideological change. She rejected wealth, status, and comfort in favor of political struggle and radical action.

From Scientist to Silk Farmer: A New Chapter in India’s Sericulture Industry A Bold Career Shift Dr. Jolapuram Umamaheswari made a life-changing decision six years ago. She left her career as a scientist in Singapore and returned to India. At that time, she had no job. Still, she was clear about one thing, she wanted independence and control over her work. Instead of looking for another research role, she explored different options. After careful study, she chose silk farming, also known as sericulture. This field combines biology, agriculture, and business. For her, it felt like a natural extension of her scientific background. Turning Science into Practice Sericulture involves raising silkworms on mulberry leaves. Farmers then collect the cocoons and extract silk fibers. Although the process sounds simple, it requires precision and care. In the beginning, Umamaheswari faced several problems. Diseases affected the silkworms. Yields were inconsistent. Managing a living system also required constant attention. These early challenges tested her patience. However, she used her scientific knowledge to improve her methods. She focused on better hygiene. She refined feeding practices. She also controlled the environment more carefully. Over time, these small changes made a big difference. Consistent Growth and Stable Income Today, her hard work has paid off. She produces around 10 batches of silk each year. Each cycle takes about 25 to 30 days. This allows her to maintain a steady production flow. She now earns nearly $1,000 per month. The income feels stable, almost like a regular salary. This is one of the biggest advantages of sericulture. Unlike many farming activities, it does not depend only on seasons. Umamaheswari believes silk farming offers reliable returns when managed properly. Her journey shows how science can support agriculture in practical ways. It also highlights new opportunities in India’s growing silk industry.

March 24, 2026
The price of oil has risen above $100 a barrel amid conflicting US-Iran talks Brent crude oil is back at $100 per barrel, after a sharp fall on Monday. This was largely due to conflicting news reports about possible negotiations between Iran and the US. US and Iran Talks: Conflicting claims The oil prices fell earlier, after US President Donald Trump declared a suspension of strikes on Iranian energy installations. On Truth Social, he said that Iran and the US had an productive conversation. Tehran, however, denied all contact and called the allegations a market manipulating attempt. Trump said on Saturday that he'd "obliterate", Iranian power plants, if the Strait of Hormuz was closed for more than 48 hours. Iran responded to the threat by saying it would target key infrastructure in that region. Brent crude rose to $113 a barrel after these statements. After Trump announced Monday that all strikes had been suspended and that both countries were working on a "COMPLETE and TOTAL" solution, prices fell and the global stock market rebounded. Market volatility Since the US and Israel attack Iran on 28th February, global energy markets are volatile. Brent crude climbed to $100 per barrel on Tuesday after Monday's drop. Asian markets were steady on Tuesday. Japan's Nikkei gained 0.8%. Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose by 1.6%. South Korea's Kospi gained 2.2%. Due to the region’s dependence on oil flowing through the Strait of Hormuz, Monday saw sharp losses. European markets responded mildly. Both the UK's FTSE 100, and Germany's Dax started slightly lower than their opening prices but both recovered by noon. The FTSE 100 ended 0.6% higher while the Dax finished just below flat. The Cac Index in France finished a little higher. S&P500 started off 0.8% lower before rebounding. Business Costs are Rising According to S&P Global Purchasing Managers' Index, UK firms reported their largest increase in monthly input costs for the past 22 years, more than three weeks after the start of the conflict. Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz on 28 February. This is where around 20 percent of world oil and gas are transported. Fuel prices have increased worldwide due to this disruption. The countries are taking measures to reduce the effects. US sanctions were temporarily lifted on oil from Russia and Iran already in the sea. China has delayed its planned increases in fuel prices to ease the burden of drivers.

Aston Martin Newey Project: Has it Really Failed Aston Martin? Many questions have been raised about the situation surrounding Adrian Newey and Aston Martin F1 Team. The plan is already viewed by many fans as a failure. The storyline is actually more complicated. Newey’s original role in the plan Newey was brought on board by Aston Martin with a vision. He was not to be tied down by daily management duties. They wanted him to concentrate on the design of cars. Newey is a master of engineering and innovation. Newey's expertise allows him to create race winning cars. His impact would be limited if he handled budgets, media, or sponsors. Andy Cowell was appointed as the Team Principal and CEO to support this new structure. As team principal and chief executive officer, he took over the operations. The setup appeared balanced and efficient on paper. The Internal Clash Has Changed Everything The plan did not work out. Newey, Cowell and others were reportedly at odds on important issues. Details are unclear but impact is obvious. Cowell was moved to a new position and lost his role as the team's leader. The team was left in a state of uncertainty as a result. In Formula 1, it is not ideal to have leadership instability. The original structure began to crumble at this stage. Newey's increased responsibility Lawrence Stroll, the team owner, still desired a leader who could manage his operations. He looked at options to close the gap. Christian Horner was a major player. This move never happened. Newey reportedly did not want to work with Newey again. Newey has now assumed a more prominent leadership position. It seems that this is more of a short-term solution rather than a plan for the long term. Aston Martin tries to fix the problem The team is still searching for the best operational leader. A more experienced manager can take on the day-today tasks and relieve Newey of some pressure. Jonathan Wheatley is a name that has been associated with this role. The team could benefit from his structure and stability. Newey could then focus on car development. What if this project fails? This project is still too young to be called a failure. It is still one of Formula 1's greatest teams. However, changes in leadership have slowed the progress. Plan has faced many challenges. On the racetrack, we will find out what really happens. The performance of Aston Martin under the new rules will determine the result. The strategy will appear smart if the car produces strong results. The criticism will be louder if the car does not deliver.

Bairstow Questions England Team Culture After Ashes Defeat Bairstow Calls for More Accountability in England Setup Jonny Bairstow has openly criticised England’s cricket system, saying the team needs to bring back a stronger sense of responsibility and care. The 36-year-old wicketkeeper believes players feel disconnected once they are dropped. He said that being part of the system offers security, but once a player is left out, the connection fades quickly. His comments come after England’s disappointing Ashes series, where the team struggled both on and off the field. Leadership Backed Despite Poor Results The England management has decided to continue with coach Brendon McCullum, director Rob Key, and captain Ben Stokes despite the 4-1 Ashes loss. Bairstow was once a key figure under this leadership. He performed strongly in 2022 and scored four centuries in his first four matches during that phase. However, a serious leg injury disrupted his momentum later that year. Although he returned for the 2023 Ashes, selectors dropped him in 2024. His last Test match, against India, also marked his 100th appearance. Injury Management Raises Concerns Bairstow also questioned how England handled player fitness, especially fast bowlers. He pointed out the case of Mark Wood, who returned after knee surgery without enough match practice. Wood managed to play only one Test before getting injured again. Bairstow said players need consistent game time to stay fit. According to him, playing only a few matches and then returning suddenly increases the risk of injuries. He added that expecting bowlers to perform at high speed without proper workload preparation is unfair. Selection Policy and Player Competition England’s management admitted they relied too much on loyalty during the Ashes. Players like Zak Crawley and Ollie Pope kept their spots despite inconsistent performances. Bairstow believes a lack of competition can lead to complacency. He said players improve when they feel pressure from others performing well in domestic cricket. He also stressed that honest feedback and direct questioning are important for growth. County Cricket Still Waiting for Recognition To fix the gap between domestic and international cricket, England plans to introduce a “county insight group.” This group will help selectors track performances in county matches. Bairstow welcomed the idea but questioned why the disconnect happened in the first place. He said actions will matter more than promises. Currently, Bairstow continues to lead Yorkshire in domestic cricket. He hopes strong performances will bring him back into selection discussions. Players Frustrated with Limited Opportunities The situation has frustrated many players outside the national squad. Liam Livingstone recently shared his disappointment and revealed he was told he “cares too much.” This reflects a deeper issue within the system, where some players feel overlooked despite good performances.

Tottenham crisis intensifies as Igor Tudor is under increasing pressure Tottenham Hotspur is facing a crisis and Igor Tudor, the head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, faces heavy pressure. Spurs are dangerously close the relegation zones after a 3-0 defeat at home against Nottingham Forest. The club is now just one point ahead of the bottom. The club's leadership is now under scrutiny. Vinai Venkatesham as CEO, Johan Lange as sporting director, and all the owners must take action quickly in order to prevent disaster. Igor Tudor struggles to change things Tudor joined the club during a period of turmoil after Thomas Frank had left. The squad was weakened by injury and low morale. There were some small improvements, but consistency was lacking. The draw with Liverpool and the win against Atletico Madrid gave some hope. The heavy defeat to Forest, however, wiped out any momentum. The tactical decisions made by Tudor have raised questions as well. Tudor chose to start Antonin Kinsky over Guglielmo Viario in a Champions League match. He replaced Kinsky after 17 minutes of the game, due to early errors. The game was a 5-2 loss. Tudor's style has not been well received by fans and players. Tudor's style of play hasn't brought in the results the team needed. What is more important: short-term fixes, or long-term goals? Spurs now must decide whether they want to keep Tudor as their coach or change. Next match against Sunderland may be critical. As possible replacements, several names have come up. Harry Redknapp, the former manager of Tottenham Hotspur has expressed interest in taking over. However, his absence as a manager for so long raises some doubts. Glenn Hoddle, another option with experience is available. However, he hasn't managed for years. Ryan Mason may return to the role of caretaker. Although he knows West Brom well, he struggled during his last role. Tim Sherwood also has expressed his confidence that the club can be saved. Robbie Keane, meanwhile, is enjoying success abroad. It is not clear if Keane would be willing to leave his stable job for a temporary challenge. Mauricio Pochettino remains fan favorite Mauricio pochettino is wanted back by many Spurs fans. After leading Spurs to the final of the Champions League in 2019, Mauricio Pochettino remains popular. He is adamant he will return to the country if given a chance. Supporters are still angry about his previous departure, and blame the former chairman Daniel Levy of not supporting him adequately. What's next for Tottenham Hotspur? Spurs is at a crucial point. A bad decision may lead to the shockingest relegation in Premier League's history. Right move can still save the season. Clubs must be quick to act, have a clear strategy and restore the confidence of their squad.

Israel plans buffer zone in Southern Lebanon amid rising tensions Israel announced its plans to control a large zone of buffer in the southern Lebanon, as part of their ongoing campaign against Hezbollah. Israel Katz, the Minister of Defence confirmed that Israeli troops have taken important steps in the field. He said that troops had destroyed five bridges on the Litani River. The bridges are located around 30 km from the Israel-Lebanon border. He claimed that Hezbollah was using the bridges to transport fighters and arms. Israel is now working to create a security zone in this area. Lebanese displaced residents won't be permitted to return home until the authorities are satisfied that northern Israel has been fully secured. Hezbollah Rocket Attacks Linked to Escalation Hezbollah's rocket attacks on northern Israel exacerbated the situation. Hezbollah claimed the rocket attack was in response to Israel's continued strikes and the death of Iran’s supreme ruler. The tensions are still high, despite the November 2024 ceasefire agreement. Hezbollah had to withdraw and disarm from the southern part of Lebanon under that agreement. It was the responsibility of both the Lebanese army and government to enforce this. A few progresses were made but they remained unfinished. Israel maintained military positions to the south, and it continued its targeting of what they called Hezbollah targets. Lebanon Struggles To Control Hezbollah Hezbollah has been a problem for the Lebanese Government since its inception. The state may not have had the power to disarm Hezbollah, despite its political will. A deeper issue is at play. A direct confrontation between Hezbollah and the Lebanese Army could lead to a conflict within the country. It is feared that it will reopen old wounds. The plan of Israel was strongly criticised by President Joseph Aoun. It was a "collective penalty against civilians", and he warned of its effect on the ordinary person. The Echoes Of Past Israeli Occupation Israel's action brings to mind its previous presence in the southern Lebanon. Israel established a similar zone in 1985 and controlled it up until 2000. Hezbollah has carried out numerous attacks on that region. Israeli forces were hit by losses and the public's pressure in Israel increased. Images of injured soldiers being evacuated were key to changing public opinion. Israel eventually withdrew. Hezbollah warns of strong resistance Hezbollah's position is clear: it won't accept Israel’s latest moves. Hassan Fadlallah, a senior official at the Hezbollah movement, described this situation as "an existential threat". The group, he said, has no choice but to fight. He said that defending land was now his top priority. Both sides are not showing any signs of giving up, so the threat of an even larger conflict is growing.

Philippines declares national energy emergency amid Middle East Conflict As the Middle East conflict continues disrupting global oil supplies, The Philippines declared an energy emergency. The executive order was signed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr to ensure the energy security of the Philippines and stabilize its economy. The ongoing conflict between the US, Israel and Iran, he warned, has created serious risks for fuel supply. This situation is worsened by disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz - a major global oil shipping route. The risks of heavy dependence on imported oil About 98% of the oil consumed in the Philippines is imported, with most of that coming from Gulf countries. The Philippines is highly dependent on global oil supply. Fuel prices have risen dramatically since the 28th of February when conflict started. The price of petrol and diesel has more than doubled since the beginning of the conflict. The sharp rise in prices has placed pressure on businesses and households. The Government takes Control Measures Declaring an emergency allows for quick action by the government. The government can purchase fuel directly and control its distribution throughout the country. The committee overseeing the distribution of goods essential to life has been created. Fuel, food and medicine are all included. It is important to keep the price of fuel and food under control. It will last for a year unless it is lifted or extended by the President. Fuel shortages are a growing concern Concerns about fuel shortages are being raised by officials. Sharon Garin, the Energy Secretary of Israel, stated that there are still 45 days worth of fuel left. In order to manage this crisis, the Government has taken several measures. To save fuel, the government has given subsidies to drivers of transport and cut ferry services. To reduce energy consumption, civil servants now work a 4-day-week. As LNG costs rise, shift towards coal In the near future, due to the rising prices of natural gas liquefied in the world market, the Philippines will rely on more coal-fired plants. The Philippines is taking this step to ensure electricity supplies despite rising energy prices. This shift could raise long-term environmental issues. Asia faces major impact from oil disruptions Asia is still highly vulnerable to the current crisis. Nearly 90% of the oil and gas that passed through Strait of Hormuz last year was bound for Asian countries. This route is directly affected by any disruption. It also has an impact on the energy supply and prices in the entire region. This situation highlights the need for long-term energy planning and diversification.
