Raghu Rai: The photographer who helped India see itself Rich tributes continue after the passing of Raghu Rai at the age of 83. He stood as one of India’s most respected photojournalists. Over more than five decades, he documented the country with depth, honesty, and sharp visual clarity. His photographs did more than record events. They helped people understand them. His work influenced how India viewed its political shifts, cultural icons, and social struggles. Early career and rise in photojournalism Raghu Rai began his professional journey in 1966 with The Statesman newspaper. He quickly developed a strong eye for real life moments. His work later expanded into editorial roles at India Today and Sunday magazine. He joined Magnum Photos in 1977. This step marked a major point in his career. Henri Cartier Bresson supported his entry, and this connection shaped his visual style and thinking. Political history through his lens Rai documented key political moments in India with rare access and sensitivity. His photographs of Indira Gandhi stand among his most recognized work. He captured her in public rallies, campaign trails, and private party meetings. He focused on expression, body language, and atmosphere rather than staged poses. His images gave the public a closer view of political power and decision making in India. Documenting conflict and crisis Raghu Rai also covered some of India’s most difficult periods. He worked in Bhopal after the gas tragedy and captured its human impact. He also documented Punjab during the militancy period in the 1980s, where violence affected thousands of lives. His photographs from these events carried emotional weight. He showed suffering, tension, and resilience without turning away from uncomfortable realities. Portraits of culture and creativity Rai photographed many well known cultural figures including Lata Mangeshkar, Satyajit Ray, M F Hussain, and Amitabh Bachchan. He focused on natural expressions and real interaction rather than formal staging. His portraits often revealed respect between the subject and their audience. He captured the human side of fame and creativity. A philosophy beyond technique Raghu Rai often described photography as more than skill or equipment. He treated it as a way to observe life closely and truthfully. His approach shaped generations of photographers in India and beyond. His work continues to influence visual storytelling today.

Rose Dugdale: From Heiress to Infamous IRA Art Heist Figure Bridget Rose Dugdale was born into wealth and privilege in 1941, with a future that seemed fully planned. She grew up surrounded by luxury, received private tutoring from a French governess, and attended elite finishing schools across Europe. Like many young women from aristocratic families, she entered high society as a debutante and was presented to the Queen. Her life appeared set for tradition, comfort, and status. But Dugdale chose a very different path. A Rejection of Privilege As she entered adulthood, Dugdale began to question the world she was raised in. She felt uneasy about the lavish lifestyle and strict social expectations. The “Season,” a formal series of elite social events designed to introduce young women into society, only deepened her discomfort. She later criticized her own coming-out ball, describing it as excessive and wasteful. The event, she said, cost as much as what dozens of elderly people might live on for months. That realization marked a turning point. Dugdale started distancing herself from her privileged background. A Radical Shift in Beliefs By her mid-30s, Dugdale had completely broken away from her former life. She gave away her inheritance and even took money from her own family to support causes she believed in. Her views became strongly anti-establishment, and she aligned herself with Irish republican ideals. Her actions soon moved beyond protest. Dugdale became involved with the Irish Republican Army (IRA), a militant group engaged in conflict over Northern Ireland. She participated in direct operations, including a helicopter hijacking used to attack a police station. This act shocked many, given her elite upbringing. One of History’s Largest Art Heists In April 1974, Dugdale took part in a major art theft that gained global attention. The group targeted a wealthy estate and stole valuable paintings. During the robbery, they removed artworks directly from their frames, causing damage in the process. The stolen collection included works of major cultural and financial value. This operation became known as one of the largest art heists ever carried out. Dugdale’s involvement placed her firmly at the center of the crime. It also showed how far she had moved from her earlier life of formality and tradition. From Socialite to Militant Operative Dugdale’s transformation did not stop at theft. She later became involved in developing explosives for IRA operations. Her journey from aristocrat to militant activist remains one of the most unusual personal shifts in modern history. Her story reflects a deep ideological change. She rejected wealth, status, and comfort in favor of political struggle and radical action.

From Scientist to Silk Farmer: A New Chapter in India’s Sericulture Industry A Bold Career Shift Dr. Jolapuram Umamaheswari made a life-changing decision six years ago. She left her career as a scientist in Singapore and returned to India. At that time, she had no job. Still, she was clear about one thing, she wanted independence and control over her work. Instead of looking for another research role, she explored different options. After careful study, she chose silk farming, also known as sericulture. This field combines biology, agriculture, and business. For her, it felt like a natural extension of her scientific background. Turning Science into Practice Sericulture involves raising silkworms on mulberry leaves. Farmers then collect the cocoons and extract silk fibers. Although the process sounds simple, it requires precision and care. In the beginning, Umamaheswari faced several problems. Diseases affected the silkworms. Yields were inconsistent. Managing a living system also required constant attention. These early challenges tested her patience. However, she used her scientific knowledge to improve her methods. She focused on better hygiene. She refined feeding practices. She also controlled the environment more carefully. Over time, these small changes made a big difference. Consistent Growth and Stable Income Today, her hard work has paid off. She produces around 10 batches of silk each year. Each cycle takes about 25 to 30 days. This allows her to maintain a steady production flow. She now earns nearly $1,000 per month. The income feels stable, almost like a regular salary. This is one of the biggest advantages of sericulture. Unlike many farming activities, it does not depend only on seasons. Umamaheswari believes silk farming offers reliable returns when managed properly. Her journey shows how science can support agriculture in practical ways. It also highlights new opportunities in India’s growing silk industry.

Rubio Signals Shift in US Foreign Policy at Munich Security Conference US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the world is entering a new phase in global politics as he arrived in Germany for the Munich Security Conference. He described this moment as a turning point and urged allies to rethink their roles in a fast changing international system. Rubio is leading the US delegation at the first major global forum since President Donald Trump renewed his controversial proposal to annex Greenland, a semi autonomous territory of Denmark. The proposal has raised serious concerns across Europe and has tested trust within the Nato alliance. Europe Reconsiders Its Security Dependence French President Emmanuel Macron has called on European nations to prepare for greater independence from the United States. He believes Europe must strengthen its own defence structure in case US support weakens. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz used his opening speech to urge Washington to rebuild transatlantic trust. He also confirmed that Germany and France are holding confidential talks about forming a joint European nuclear deterrent. At present, only France and the United Kingdom possess nuclear weapons in Europe. Many other European countries rely on the US nuclear umbrella under NATO for protection. Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte said the transatlantic bond remains strong and essential, despite political tensions. Greenland Dispute Adds Pressure Tensions increased after Trump claimed Greenland holds strategic value for US national security. He argued that Russian and Chinese ships operate heavily in the region, although he offered no clear evidence. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen plans to meet Rubio to address these concerns. Many European leaders see the Greenland issue as a serious challenge to alliance unity. Ukraine War and Peace Talks The war in Ukraine remains a top priority at the conference. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the meeting could lead to new steps that strengthen both Ukrainian and European security. Russia, Ukraine, and the United States have scheduled fresh peace talks in Geneva on 17 and 18 February. Earlier discussions in Abu Dhabi produced no breakthrough, although both sides carried out a prisoner exchange soon after. US China and Iran in Focus Rubio also met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on the sidelines of the conference. Washington and Beijing are trying to ease tensions over trade, tariffs, and Taiwan. Last week, Chinese President Xi Jinping described Taiwan as the most sensitive issue between China and the United States. He urged caution regarding US military support for the island. Iran’s nuclear programme is another key topic. Tehran insists its programme serves peaceful purposes. However, Trump has warned that the US could consider military action if Iran refuses to agree to a new nuclear deal. A Defining Moment for the Transatlantic Alliance The Munich Security Conference gathers around 50 global leaders this year. Discussions focus on European defence, Nato’s future, and the strength of US alliances. Many experts believe US foreign policy changes have already reshaped global dynamics. The coming months may determine whether transatlantic cooperation grows stronger or faces deeper strain.

Tumbler Ridge Mass Shooting Leaves Small Canadian Town in Deep Mourning A quiet mountain town in western Canada is struggling to come to terms with an unthinkable tragedy. In Tumbler Ridge, nine people, including six children, lost their lives in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent Canadian history. For years, residents believed serious violence could never reach their close knit community. That sense of safety has now been shattered. A Community That Felt Untouchable Tumbler Ridge is home to about 2,400 people. It sits along winding rural roads in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Many families work in the mining industry, which has shaped the town’s identity for decades. The area is also known for its natural beauty and its UNESCO recognised geopark, one of only five in Canada. Locals often left doors unlocked. Newcomers who took extra security measures were teased. Nothing like this had ever happened before. Now, that belief feels painfully naive. The Victims: Young Lives Cut Short Police confirmed the identities of the victims on Thursday. Among them was 12 year old Zoey Benoit. Loved ones described her as a brave and determined child. Another victim, 12 year old Kylie Smith, was remembered as the light of her family. She dreamed of attending art school in a big city one day. Flowers, teddy bears, and handwritten notes now line a memorial outside the local school. Each item reflects a life lost too soon. What Police Know So Far Investigators say 18 year old Jesse Van Rootselaar carried out the attack. Authorities found the suspect dead from a self inflicted gunshot wound at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. Police stated that the suspect was born male and had begun transitioning to female about six years ago. Earlier that day, the suspect allegedly shot and killed their mother and step brother at a nearby residence. Officers later responded to reports of gunfire at the secondary school around 13:30 local time. The school has about 160 students. During the attack, dozens hid inside classrooms with their teachers. Seventeen year old Darian Quist said he and classmates barricaded themselves inside a mechanics classroom using metal tables. They stayed hidden for more than two hours before officers from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and SWAT teams escorted them to safety. Grief That Touches Everyone Parents gathered at a community centre as they waited for news about their children. For some, the wait ended in heartbreak. Local pastor Tracy Krauss said nearly everyone in town knows someone directly affected. Even families who did not lose a loved one feel shaken. The suspect’s mother and step brother were also among the victims. Community members say the surviving relatives are grieving as well. The suspect’s father, Justin Van Rootselaar, told CBC News that he was estranged from his child. He offered condolences to all families impacted by what he called a senseless act of violence. Support has poured in from across the country. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is scheduled to visit the town to offer his support. A Town Forever Changed Residents say the hardest part is that this happened in a place where everyone knows each other. The victims were not strangers. They were classmates, neighbours, and family friends. In Tumbler Ridge, grief now connects every household. The town may be small, but the loss feels immeasurable.

Thailand School Siege: Principal Dies After Gunman Attack in Hat Yai Principal Succumbs to Injuries After School Shooting A tragic school shooting in southern Thailand has claimed the life of a respected principal. Sasiphat Sinsamosorn died early Thursday morning after suffering serious gunshot wounds during a violent siege at Phatong Prathan Keeriwat School near Hat Yai. The attack took place shortly before 5:00 PM local time on Wednesday. An 18 year old gunman entered the school building and opened fire, leaving students and teachers trapped inside for nearly two hours. Doctors tried to save the principal, but she passed away before dawn, according to local police officials. Students Injured During the Chaos The gunman also shot a female student during the attack. Doctors say she is now in stable condition and continues to receive medical care. Another student suffered injuries after jumping from a window while trying to escape the building. That student remains hospitalized. Police arrested the suspect after a tense two hour standoff. Officers secured the school and evacuated those inside once they took him into custody. Possible Motive Under Investigation Authorities have not confirmed the exact motive behind the shooting. However, local media reports suggest the suspect may have had a personal dispute with a teacher at the school. Investigators continue to question the suspect and review evidence to understand what led to the violent incident. School Community in Mourning The school shared a heartfelt message on Facebook expressing deep sorrow over the loss of their principal. In the post, the school described Sasiphat as a kind and dedicated leader. Staff and students praised her compassion and commitment to education. Many community members have gathered to pay tribute and offer condolences to her family. Rising Concerns Over Gun Violence in Thailand Thailand continues to face serious challenges related to gun violence. Firearm ownership remains widespread across the country, both legally and illegally. In recent years, several deadly shootings have shocked the nation. Last year, a gunman killed five people at a food market in Bangkok. In 2023, a 14 year old boy shot and killed two people inside a luxury shopping mall in central Bangkok. In one of the deadliest incidents, a former police officer killed 36 people, including many children, at a kindergarten in northeastern Thailand in 2022. These repeated tragedies have increased public concern about school safety and firearm control laws.

Imran Khan’s Vision Deteriorates in Jail Former Prime Minister Imran Khan has reportedly lost most of the vision in his right eye while serving time in Adiala Jail. His lawyer, Salman Safdar, shared this update with Pakistan’s Supreme Court. Safdar said Khan now has only 15 percent vision left in his right eye. He explained that Khan first noticed blurred and hazy vision around three to four months ago. Despite informing the jail superintendent, authorities only provided eye drops. They did not arrange specialized medical treatment at that time. Diagnosis Reveals Serious Eye Condition During a recent prison visit, Safdar observed that Khan appeared deeply distressed. Doctors later diagnosed a blood clot in his right eye. The clot caused severe damage and significantly reduced his eyesight. The lawyer submitted a detailed medical report to Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan. He requested that experts examine Khan and provide proper treatment. He also asked the court to allow Khan better access to his family and improved prison conditions. Previously, authorities confirmed that Khan underwent a 20 minute medical procedure at PIMS Hospital in Islamabad on 24 January. Minister Ata Tarar had stated at the time that Khan was fine and healthy. Supreme Court Grants Limited Relief After reviewing the matter, the Supreme Court allowed Khan to consult his personal doctors inside Adiala Jail. The court also permitted him to speak with his sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, by phone. Safdar had been the first outside visitor allowed to meet Khan in seven weeks. He said the delay in medical care contributed to the serious damage in his client’s eye. Prison Conditions Under Scrutiny The lawyer’s report described Khan’s prison cell as basic but functional. The room contains simple furniture, around 100 books, two dumbbells, a prayer mat, and a television that does not work. During the summer, the cell reportedly becomes hot and humid. Insects and mosquitoes frequently enter the room. The report also claimed that Khan suffered food poisoning two to three times during the hotter months. Khan has access to a small 12 by 30 foot lawn during daytime hours. A fellow inmate assists him with cleaning the cell. However, government officials previously described him as “the most privileged prisoner in Pakistan,” stating that he has access to gym equipment and a cook. Background of Imran Khan’s Imprisonment Imran Khan served as Pakistan’s Prime Minister from 2018 to 2022. Before entering politics, he captained the national cricket team and led Pakistan to a World Cup victory. Authorities arrested him in August 2023. Since then, he has faced more than 100 legal cases. These include allegations of leaking state secrets and illegally selling state gifts. Khan has consistently denied all charges and claims they are politically motivated. His arrest sparked widespread protests across the country. Security forces responded with a strict crackdown. Thousands of supporters were arrested, and many were injured during clashes. The latest development regarding his health has added new concerns to an already tense political situation in Pakistan.
