Police have called on England supporters in the UK to follow the positive example set by fans attending the World Cup quarter final in the United States after hundreds of football related incidents occurred at home.
More than 500 incidents were reported across the UK during England’s dramatic 2 to 1 extra time victory over Norway on Saturday. Police made over 100 arrests following disorder linked to the match.
Positive Atmosphere Among England Fans in Miami
The behaviour of supporters in Miami was very different. Around 40,000 fans attended the quarter final match and created a passionate but friendly atmosphere.
Mark Roberts, chief constable of the UK Football Policing Unit, praised the supporters in the United States and said fans in England should follow the same example.
He said the Miami crowd enjoyed the match without hostility or trouble between rival supporters.
Roberts expressed disappointment that similar scenes did not happen in the UK.
Alcohol Linked to Increase in Incidents
Police officials said many of the problems in the UK involved alcohol. Extended pub opening hours allowed fans to watch the full match, which started at 22:00 BST.
Authorities also reported more calls from venues showing the game on large screens as thousands of supporters gathered to watch England’s progress.
Roberts described this World Cup as the most challenging tournament in terms of football related incidents and arrests in the UK.
He encouraged supporters to enjoy England’s upcoming semi final against Argentina while avoiding behaviour that could harm others.
Police Prepare for England vs Argentina Semi Final
England will face Argentina in the World Cup semi final at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday. Police in Atlanta have increased security measures ahead of the important match.
Officials said these steps aim to prevent crime and help fans enjoy the historic event safely.
Fans Asked to Celebrate Responsibly
Authorities have reminded supporters that football should bring people together. Police hope England fans in the UK can create the same friendly atmosphere seen among supporters in Miami.
