Sudan RSF Chief Hemedti Sentenced to Death Over War Crimes A Sudanese court has sentenced Rapid Support Forces leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, widely known as Hemedti, to death over alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide linked to violence in West Darfur. The court in Port Sudan convicted Hemedti and 15 other senior RSF members. The verdict also included his brother and RSF deputy leader Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo, another brother Al Qoni Hamdan Dagalo, and West Darfur commander Abdul Rahman Juma Barkallah. The court delivered the ruling while all defendants remained absent. Their current locations remain unknown. Court Accuses RSF Leaders of West Darfur Atrocities The trial focused on attacks in el Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, during 2023. Prosecutors accused RSF forces and allied groups of carrying out deadly attacks against civilians. The court said the defendants organized attacks that caused widespread destruction, property theft, and damage to schools, religious sites, homes and civilian areas. The judges also ordered the confiscation of RSF assets. They asked authorities to request Interpol Red Notices to help arrest and extradite those convicted. RSF Rejects War Crimes Allegations The RSF has not responded to the latest court decision. However, the group has previously denied accusations of war crimes during the conflict. The ruling marks the first major judicial conviction against RSF leadership since Sudan’s civil war began in April 2023. Despite the verdict, its practical impact remains uncertain because the RSF still controls large areas in western Sudan and its leaders remain outside army control. International Groups Report Serious Human Rights Abuses United Nations investigators and human rights organisations have accused the RSF and allied Arab militias of targeting the Masalit community and other non Arab groups in Darfur. A recent investigation by international authorities found evidence connecting RSF leaders to serious violations during the conflict. Human Rights Watch reported that violence around el Geneina between April and November 2023 killed thousands of people and forced hundreds of thousands to leave their homes. The organisation said the attacks included war crimes and crimes against humanity linked to an ethnic cleansing campaign. Sudan Civil War Causes Humanitarian Crisis Sudan entered a devastating civil war in April 2023 after a power struggle between army chief General Abdel Fattah al Burhan and RSF leader Hemedti. Both the Sudanese army and RSF have faced accusations of attacking civilians and damaging important facilities, including hospitals and other essential services. The conflict has killed more than 150,000 people and forced around 12 million others to flee their homes. Aid agencies warn that nearly 28 million people are facing severe hunger because of the ongoing crisis. The death sentence against Hemedti represents a major legal challenge for the RSF leadership, but the conflict continues to shape Sudan’s future as fighting remains active across several regions.

North American Free Trade Deal Faces Uncertain Future as USMCA Review Deadline Arrives The United States, Canada, and Mexico have reached a key milestone in the review of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). However, trade officials are not expected to finalize any major decisions on the July 1 deadline. Representatives from all three countries will hold formal discussions as part of the scheduled review process. While Canada and Mexico have publicly supported renewing the agreement, the United States has not yet announced its final position. Canada and Mexico Support the Trade Pact Canadian and Mexican leaders continue to back the USMCA, which serves as the foundation for trade across North America. The agreement supports businesses, workers, and industries that rely on cross-border commerce. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney recently indicated that he does not expect a final agreement to emerge from the current round of discussions. Instead, negotiations are likely to continue in the coming weeks and months. Canadian officials remain focused on protecting domestic industries, workers, and farmers while maintaining strong trade relationships with neighboring countries. Trump's Position Creates Uncertainty US President Donald Trump has raised concerns about the future of the agreement. He recently suggested that the deal could expire and argued that the United States might benefit from pursuing alternative trade arrangements. His comments have increased uncertainty surrounding the review process. As a result, businesses and investors are closely monitoring developments between the three countries. Trade tensions have also intensified due to tariff disputes and retaliatory measures, making negotiations more challenging than many analysts originally expected. Why the USMCA Matters The USMCA replaced the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) during Trump's first presidential term. Since then, it has played a vital role in supporting economic cooperation across North America. The trade pact covers a market of approximately 510 million people and supports nearly $1.6 trillion in annual trade. It also strengthens major industries, including automotive manufacturing, agriculture, and energy production. Many companies depend on the agreement because it reduces trade barriers and helps products move efficiently across borders. Trade Talks Will Continue Beyond July 1 Despite the importance of the July 1 review deadline, all three governments expect negotiations to continue afterward. Officials from the United States and Mexico have already scheduled additional bilateral discussions later this month. Experts believe the review process could extend for several months before the countries reach a clear conclusion regarding the future of the agreement. For now, the USMCA remains in effect and continues to provide significant trade benefits throughout North America. What's Next for North American Trade? The coming months will play a critical role in shaping the future of regional trade. Canada and Mexico remain committed to preserving the agreement, while the United States continues to evaluate its options. Although the July 1 deadline marks an important stage in the review process, it is unlikely to produce an immediate outcome. Instead, ongoing negotiations will determine whether the USMCA continues in its current form or undergoes significant changes.

Jayson Gillham Loses Gaza Comments Case Against Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Acclaimed British Australian pianist Jayson Gillham has lost his workplace discrimination case against the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) over comments he made about the Gaza war during a concert. The Federal Court ruled that the orchestra did not cancel his performance because of his political beliefs. Justice Graeme Hill said the decision was made because MSO wanted to manage possible damage to its reputation and business after the comments. Court Rules MSO Acted Over Reputation Concerns Gillham took legal action against the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra after it cancelled his scheduled recital in August 2024. The cancellation happened shortly after he spoke about the deaths of Palestinian journalists during a Melbourne performance. During the concert, he introduced a five minute piece titled Witness, composed by Connor D'Netto and dedicated to journalists in Gaza. Gillham told the audience that more than 100 Palestinian journalists had been killed since the start of the Israel Gaza war in October 2023. He also accused Israel of carrying out targeted attacks against journalists. He said the killing of journalists was a war crime under international law and argued that such actions prevented the world from seeing evidence of possible war crimes. Judge Says Political Views Were Not the Reason Justice Graeme Hill rejected Gillham's claim that he faced discrimination because of his political views. The judge said the MSO had a policy of avoiding public support for either side in the Israel Gaza conflict. He also noted that classical musicians usually do not make political statements from the stage without approval from the event organiser. According to the ruling, the orchestra cancelled the recital because it believed the comments could negatively affect its public image and operations. Orchestra Later Called Cancellation an Error The MSO received three complaints following Gillham's remarks and decided to cancel his upcoming recital on 15 August 2024. The decision caused a strong public reaction, with almost 500 complaints being submitted against the cancellation. The orchestra later admitted that cancelling the performance was an error and attempted to arrange a new date for the event. During the trial, MSO argued that its stage was meant for musical performances rather than personal political statements. Gillham's legal team argued that he had the right to express his beliefs and should not face workplace consequences because of them. Gillham Responds After Court Decision Following the judgment, Gillham said he was disappointed and needed time to consider the decision before making further comments. The case lasted three weeks and included evidence from Gillham, MSO executives, and other witnesses. The ruling has renewed discussions about freedom of expression, political statements by artists, and the responsibilities of cultural organisations.

# Can China Use Its New Ethnic Unity Law to Target Critics Living Abroad? China has introduced a new **Ethnic Unity Law**, raising fresh concerns among human rights groups, overseas activists, and ethnic minority communities. The law officially came into effect on July 1, 2026. Many critics believe it gives Chinese authorities a stronger legal basis to take action against people living outside China who speak out on issues related to Tibet, Xinjiang, and other ethnic minority regions. ## A Student's Case Raises International Concerns One case attracting global attention involves 23 year old Chinese student Zhang Yadi, also known as Tara. She had been studying at a leading university in the United Kingdom before returning to China for a visit. Before traveling home, Tara posted a birthday message for the Dalai Lama on the social media platform X. She also helped edit an online Chinese language platform that supported Tibetan rights while studying in France. Reports suggest Chinese authorities arrested her in Yunnan Province during her visit. She now faces accusations of encouraging separatism and harming national unity. Although officials have not released many details, rights groups believe her online activities played a major role in her detention. ## What Is China's New Ethnic Unity Law? The new law aims to strengthen national unity among China's 56 officially recognized ethnic groups. Government officials say the legislation will promote social harmony, reduce ethnic conflict, and build a stronger national identity. However, many international organizations argue that the law could reduce freedom of expression instead of protecting diversity. They fear authorities may use broad legal language to silence peaceful discussions about minority rights. ## Why Critics Abroad Are Worried One of the most debated sections is **Article 63**. It allows Chinese authorities to take action against organizations or individuals outside China if they believe those people damage ethnic unity or create ethnic division. Legal experts say enforcing the law in other countries will be difficult. Even so, the law could discourage overseas activists from speaking publicly. Many fear that their comments could place family members in China under pressure or legal investigation. For many Chinese citizens living overseas, this creates uncertainty. Some may avoid discussing sensitive issues because they worry about possible consequences if they return home. ## Human Rights Groups Express Concern Several international human rights organizations have criticized the legislation. They argue that peaceful support for Tibetan, Uyghur, or other minority communities could now face greater legal risks under Chinese law. According to these organizations, the law may increase pressure on activists, researchers, journalists, and students who discuss ethnic minority rights while living abroad. ## International Response The law has also drawn attention in Europe. Some members of the European Parliament have warned that countries should carefully review their extradition agreements with China. They believe the legislation could create diplomatic tensions if it targets foreign citizens or residents. Governments in several countries continue to monitor how China applies the law and whether it affects freedom of expression beyond its borders. ## China Continues to Expand Its Global Image At the same time, China continues promoting itself as an international destination for tourism, investment, and diplomacy. The government has relaxed visa rules for travelers from dozens of countries and welcomed world leaders through high profile diplomatic meetings. Supporters say these efforts highlight China's economic growth and cultural diversity. Critics, however, argue that the new law sends a different message by increasing concerns about free speech and political expression. ## Conclusion China's new Ethnic Unity Law has become one of the country's most closely watched legal developments. Supporters describe it as a tool to strengthen national unity, while critics believe it could expand pressure on activists living overseas. Although many questions remain about how the law will be enforced internationally, it has already sparked debate about human rights, freedom of expression, and China's growing influence beyond its borders.

Antwerp Apartment Fire Kills Six, Dozens Injured After Massive Blaze Tragic Fire Breaks Out in Antwerp Residential Building At least six people lost their lives and several others suffered injuries after a devastating fire swept through a 10 storey apartment building in Antwerp, Belgium, on Wednesday morning. Emergency services rushed to the scene after the fire started shortly before 10:00 local time in the Linkeroever district. The blaze produced thick black smoke that quickly spread through the building, forcing residents to escape under dangerous conditions. Firefighters launched a large scale rescue operation as smoke filled multiple floors. Hundreds of Residents Affected Authorities confirmed that more than 200 people live in the apartment complex. Rescue teams evacuated around 80 flats to protect residents from the rapidly spreading smoke. Officials later said that a technical problem on the ground floor likely caused the fire. Investigators continue to examine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident. Emergency crews remained at the site for several hours to secure the building and search every apartment for anyone who might still be trapped. Dramatic Escape Captured on Video Several residents faced terrifying moments while trying to escape. One widely shared video showed a man climbing from his balcony into a neighboring apartment through a window to avoid the heavy smoke. Another resident explained that smoke blocked every possible exit from his apartment. He and his family stayed inside, moved onto their balcony, and waited for firefighters. Rescue crews arrived with a ladder within minutes and safely brought them down. Firefighters Face Difficult Conditions Firefighters worked under extremely challenging conditions because thick smoke reduced visibility throughout the building. The smoke spread much faster than expected, making evacuations more difficult. Rescue teams searched each apartment one by one to ensure that no residents remained inside. Authorities said the fire was nearly under control by Wednesday afternoon, although emergency crews continued inspecting the building for safety. Families Escape, But Pets Could Not Be Saved One resident said his parents in law, including former Antwerp mayor Bob Cools, escaped safely and received medical treatment at a nearby hospital. He also shared that despite every effort by rescuers, the family's pet cat could not be saved. Belgian Leaders Express Condolences Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever expressed sympathy for the victims, injured residents, and everyone affected by the tragedy. He described the incident as a heartbreaking event for the Linkeroever community. Lawmakers in the Flemish Parliament also honored the victims by observing a minute of silence before beginning their parliamentary session. Investigation Continues Authorities continue investigating the cause of the fire while engineers assess the building's structural safety. Officials are also providing support to displaced families who cannot yet return to their homes. The tragic incident has raised fresh concerns about fire safety in residential buildings and the importance of emergency evacuation procedures. Local authorities are expected to release additional information as the investigation progresses.

England Face Defensive Selection Headache Before DR Congo Clash England's preparations for their FIFA World Cup last 32 match against DR Congo have suffered another setback after both Jarell Quansah and Reece James missed training. Their absence has increased concerns over England's options at right back just days before the knockout fixture. The latest injury problems have also raised fresh questions about Thomas Tuchel's squad selection and whether England have enough depth in the full back positions. Quansah Suffers Ankle Injury Jarell Quansah picked up a twisted ankle during England's 2,0 victory over Panama in their final group stage match. The defender was forced off after an impressive World Cup debut, with Djed Spence replacing him during the second half. Quansah earned his place in the starting lineup after Reece James suffered a hamstring injury against Ghana. His injury now leaves England facing another defensive concern before the crucial knockout match. Reece James Yet to Return Reece James has not returned to full training since hurting his hamstring in England's goalless draw against Ghana. Although Thomas Tuchel previously suggested the Chelsea defender could recover in time for the DR Congo match, his continued absence from training makes his participation increasingly unlikely. England's coaching staff will continue monitoring his recovery, but time is running out before kickoff. Squad Balance Under Discussion England's injury problems have increased criticism of the squad's defensive balance. Before the tournament began, Newcastle United full back Tino Livramento withdrew because of a calf injury. England replaced him with Trevoh Chalobah. However, Tuchel explained that Chalobah was selected mainly as central defensive cover rather than as a right back. That decision has become a talking point after multiple injuries affected England's defensive options. Djed Spence Could Start Djed Spence now looks like one of the strongest candidates to start at right back. The Tottenham defender has already shown his versatility during the tournament. He played briefly at left back against Croatia before starting in the same position against Ghana. Later in that match, he switched to right back after replacing Quansah. His ability to perform on both sides of the defense gives Tuchel valuable flexibility ahead of the knockout stage. Ezri Konsa Remains Another Option Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa could also move into the right back role if needed. Since taking charge in January 2025, Tuchel has regularly trusted Konsa in England's defense. The experienced defender also has previous experience at right back after making his England debut in that position against Brazil, where he impressed while marking Vinicius Junior. His defensive reliability makes him another strong option if Quansah and James remain unavailable. Trent Alexander Arnold Still Waiting Meanwhile, Trent Alexander Arnold continues to struggle for regular opportunities under Tuchel. The Real Madrid defender has featured only once during Tuchel's tenure because of earlier injury setbacks. He was also left out of England's squad before the World Cup, leaving him unavailable despite the current injury concerns. England Looking for Defensive Stability England will hope to receive positive injury updates before facing DR Congo. With the knockout rounds now underway, Tuchel must decide whether to rely on Spence, Konsa, or another defensive solution to keep England's World Cup campaign on track.
