A fast moving wildfire in northern Greece has claimed the life of one man and forced authorities to evacuate residents from a nearby village. The deadly fire broke out close to the city of Thessaloniki and spread rapidly because of strong winds and extremely dry weather.
Emergency teams discovered the victim’s body in a burned area near Liti, located around 15 kilometers northwest of Thessaloniki. Officials have not yet confirmed the man’s identity or the circumstances surrounding his death.
Firefighters Race to Stop the Flames
More than 100 firefighters worked throughout the day and into the evening to control the wildfire. They received support from dozens of fire engines and at least seven firefighting aircraft.
The fire expanded quickly after it started during the afternoon. Witnesses reported that the flames stretched for nearly five kilometers, making firefighting efforts more difficult. Gusty winds continued to push the fire into nearby forest areas and caused repeated flare ups.
Woman Injured While Trying to Protect Property
A woman suffered burns to her hands while trying to put out the fire herself. Medical teams treated her injuries after emergency crews reached the area.
Officials urged residents in Liti to leave immediately as the fire moved closer to homes. Reports also indicated that several properties suffered damage while the flames advanced toward the nearby village of Melissochori.
Cause of the Fire Still Under Investigation
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the wildfire. Investigators will examine the area once firefighters fully contain the blaze.
Before the fire started, officials had already placed the region under a high wildfire risk warning. Hot temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds created dangerous conditions that allowed the flames to spread at high speed.
Greece Faces Another Challenging Fire Season
Greece continues to face a difficult wildfire season as summer temperatures rise. Heatwaves and prolonged dry conditions have increased the risk of forest fires across the country in recent years.
Emergency services remain on high alert as firefighters continue working to stop the blaze and protect nearby communities. Authorities have also urged residents to follow evacuation orders and stay away from affected areas until conditions become safe.
