A former Olympic athlete is facing legal trouble after authorities accused him of damaging the famous Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, DC.
David “Davey” Hearn, a three time Olympic canoeist, was indicted after investigators claimed he intentionally damaged a newly installed protective sealant inside the Reflecting Pool. Officials estimate the damage at around $1,000 and have charged him with felony destruction of property.
Authorities Claim Damage Was Intentional
According to federal prosecutors, the incident took place on June 19, 2026. Authorities allege that Hearn reached into the water and pulled up part of the recently installed sealant lining the bottom of the Reflecting Pool.
US Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that National Park Service workers had spent significant time restoring the historic site. She said the alleged actions caused unnecessary damage to a major national landmark.
The Reflecting Pool recently underwent a $14 million renovation project. The restoration aimed to improve the pool’s condition and preserve one of Washington’s most visited attractions.
Hearn Denies Any Wrongdoing
Hearn strongly rejects the allegations against him. He previously explained that he stopped near the Reflecting Pool after a long bike ride and became curious about the condition of the water feature.
He said he only touched material that already appeared damaged. According to Hearn, he did not tear, remove, peel, or destroy any part of the sealant.
The former Olympian described his arrest as unfair and argued that authorities had wrongly targeted him. His legal team also criticized the charges and insisted that he is innocent.
In a statement, Hearn’s attorneys said the indictment unfairly shifts attention away from problems connected to the renovation project.
Ongoing Problems at the Reflecting Pool
Despite the expensive renovation, the Reflecting Pool has experienced several issues in recent months. Reports have highlighted algae growth and sections of sealant peeling away from the pool’s surface.
Officials previously stated that some damage appeared to have been caused by sharp objects. As a result, law enforcement increased monitoring around the area.
Authorities have arrested five people in connection with vandalism cases involving the Reflecting Pool. They have also issued federal citations to five others.
Trump Calls for Immediate Repairs
President Donald Trump recently commented on the condition of the Reflecting Pool. After inspecting the site, he called for immediate repair work and blamed vandals for the damage.
Trump expressed frustration over the condition of the landmark and questioned why anyone would intentionally harm such a historic location.
Investigation Continues
The case against Davey Hearn remains ongoing. Prosecutors believe the evidence supports the charges, while Hearn and his attorneys continue to deny any wrongdoing.
As legal proceedings move forward, investigators will work to determine exactly what happened at the Reflecting Pool and who bears responsibility for the damage.
