Arrival in Rotterdam
A Dutch cruise ship, MV Hondius, arrived at the port of Rotterdam after being linked to a hantavirus outbreak during its voyage. Only the crew remained on board for the final journey. Passengers had already left the ship in the Canary Islands between 10 and 11 May.
Port officials confirmed that special arrangements were made before arrival. Mobile housing units with catering and communication facilities were set up so the crew could isolate safely after docking.
Deaths and Reported Infections
The outbreak on board has led to serious consequences. A Dutch couple and a German woman died after traveling on the ship. Two of them were confirmed to have been infected with hantavirus.
Health authorities also reported multiple infections among passengers. Canadian officials confirmed another case recently, increasing the total number of known infections among passengers to eleven.
Earlier updates from global health authorities confirmed several cases under investigation, including both confirmed and suspected infections linked to the ship.
Health Response and Isolation Measures
Health teams worked with port authorities before the ship arrived in Rotterdam. The regional health service coordinated testing procedures with the ship’s medical staff.
Samples were collected on board by the ship’s doctor and nurse. These tests will be analyzed after arrival, with further checks planned to assess whether any crew members were exposed.
Health officials recommended strict isolation for people leaving the ship. The World Health Organization advised a quarantine period of forty two days as a precaution.
Cleaning and Future Departure
After docking, the ship will undergo full cleaning and sanitation procedures. Authorities stated that the vessel will only be allowed to depart again once it is considered safe.
Workers in protective equipment were seen on board during arrival operations. Port officials said the process was carefully planned with health services to reduce any risk of further spread.
