Sudden Resignation from CBP Leadership
Michael Banks has stepped down from his position as chief of the US Customs and Border Protection agency. He confirmed that his resignation took effect immediately. He shared the update during an interview with Fox News and also sent a farewell note to staff.
Banks said he decided it was time to retire and return to Texas to focus on his family and ranch life.
Claims of Border Security Improvements
In his message to staff, Banks highlighted the progress he believes was made during his tenure. He said the border situation had improved significantly compared to earlier conditions. He credited Border Patrol personnel for their work and commitment.
He described the changes as a major turnaround in border management during his leadership period.
Background and Career Path
Before becoming chief, Banks had experience in law enforcement and served in the US Navy. He also worked in advisory roles on border issues at the state level in Texas. Earlier in his career, he held mid level positions within US Customs and Border Protection.
He previously left the agency under the Biden administration due to concerns about morale and policy direction. Later, he returned to public service during Donald Trump’s presidency.
Wider Changes in Immigration Leadership
During the current administration, Border Patrol has taken part in enforcement operations in several major US cities. These actions have drawn public debate and criticism, especially after violent incidents involving federal immigration officers in Minneapolis earlier in the year.
It is still unclear who will take over the role of CBP chief next.
